News: SnK x Takara Tomy Arts Fantasy Aquarium Collaboration Event

Event Dates: June 23rd to July 6th, 2018 Retail Prices: Various

Takaratomy Arts has announced a SnK collaboration event called “Shingeki no Kuusou Kyojin Suizokukan,” or “Attack of the Fantasy Aquarium!”

Taking place at Tokyo Station Character Street B1K, the two-week long event will feature visuals of the Fantasy Aquarium creature characters dressed up in Survey Corps uniforms and 3DMG, while SnK characters Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Levi, Erwin, and Hanji will don Fantasy Aquarium character capes!

Araki: In Season 3, the battle Eren and co. confronts is against fellow humans, so their personal “righteousness” will be shaken. There will be self-doubts like “Is what I’m doing the right thing?” Koizuka: The highlights in the story are as Araki-san says. On the other hand, in terms of animation, the hesitation and frustration [The characters go through] during those fights are central to the action sequences - and those are completely different from their feelings during Titan battles. Additionally, when a certain plot point unravels, we’ve included types of special effects that have yet to be seen in the SnK anime. Something ridiculously huge will appear, so we implemented different SFX.

Araki: In the source material, there is a sequence I’m personally anticipating the creation of. It’s when Eren struggles with his own “inferiority.” That portrayal of raw human anguish exceeds the emotions typically seen in shounen manga. I myself feel that the Eren who endures this inner conflict is more appealing than the one who screams, “I’ll eliminate all the Titans!” When I initially read that part in the manga, my appreciation for Eren increased tenfold.

Whether it is structural composition or animation, season 3 differs from the previous 2 quite a lot - it almost feels like an entirely new series. Whether it is Eren, Levi, or other characters, the production now focuses on their innermost attributes, and it will be quite clear that up to now, we’ve only understood them on a surface level. Even just looking at a key animation draft, it’s apparent that this is not a direct extension of the previous seasons.

Araki: When we discussed what the ending of season 3 should demonstrate with Isayama-sensei, his thought was something that was quite challenging to create. I thought, “Wow, if anyone can capture that, then they’re really impressive.” So I was quite excited. It’s a moment that will make the audience fidget in their seats, as if someone dragged a knife against the skin on their necks and broke through. Moreover…season 3 allowed us to enter a certain “forbidden territory.” It’s truly a stimulating piece of work that throws down the gauntlet.

Funimation to Screen SnK Season 3′s First Episode in US & Canadian Theaters Two Weeks Before Japan Premiere (UPDATE: World Premiere at Anime Expo on July 8th)

In an unprecedented occasion, Funimation has announced a special treat for US and Canadian SnK fans: the 3rd compilation film, ~Kakusei no Houkou~ (Roar of Awakening), will be paired with the 1st episode of the anime’s 3rd season in US & Canadian movie theaters! 

The two-night only event will take place from July 10th to July 11th, 2018, which means that the first season 3 episode will air in North America two weeks before its Japan premiere date of July 22nd. Both subbed and dubbed versions will be available on alternate nights (10th subbed & 11th dubbed).

Update (June 12th, 2018): Great news for this year’s Anime Expo attendees - WIT Studio has announced that the 3rd compilation film and season 3 episode 1 will premiere at the convention’s last day, July 8th, at the 11:30am session in LACC/Main Event (Hall B)! Both of Eren’s voice actors, Kaji Yuuki (Japanese) and Bryce Papenbrook (English dub) will also make special appearances there! This premiere is two days before the Funimation wide release.
