I'm on my way back from watching The Clouds Gather. Just a few first impressions:
I think they did a pretty good job overall. The movie covers chapters 1 till 7 and the first half of chapter 8, with flashbacks to Don't Stay Gold and Tadayoedo strewn in here and there. It ends where Yashiro is being taken to the hospital after he got shot.
Especially the first half is mostly dialogue with little movement. It felt a bit long at times, but maybe that's just because I've read the manga so many times that I know the first chapters by heart.
They did have to cut quite a few scenes obviously. Nanahara doesn't confuse Aoi for a boy for example, or Yashiro doesn't request Doumeki's Wiener for breakfast and more, so if you know the manga you will notice a few jumps, but it would have been impossible to cover everything in 60 minutes, so it didn't bother me too much.
The plot follows the timeline of the manga for the most part. It only differs where flashbacks to Tadayoedo were inserted.
There were no dicks shown, so nothing had to be censored. I was actually relieved because it felt weirdly intimate to watch the sex scenes in a full movie theater. 😂
Yashiro looks pretty masculine in the shower scene with more muscles than in the manga, but I loved that, because it was well balanced and not too much for his body type.
The backgrounds are beautiful.
Yashiro looks fantastic in his suit, especially with the jacket off.
The facial expressions are a bit stiff at times and don't transport as much emotion as the voices, which made for an odd contrast in some scenes, but maybe it just felt that way because I'm so obsessed with the drama CDs.
My favorite scenes were the shower scene, the tiger sweater scene + Yashiro in Doumeki's lap, the cinema scene and the flashbacks to Tadayoedo.
I also really loved the dramatic ending: Yashiro in the ambulance, Doumeki shaking next to him, Yashiro remembering the time Kageyama broke his heart and being raped by his stepfather as a child, and then Moratorium starts playing which fits the sad mood so well. No wonder Sensei almost started crying when she first watched the movie.
Kuga looks gorgeous. I love his hair and the jewelry.
The voice actors did a fantastic job. Especially Shingaki-san's performance was amazing, and even better than on the drama CDs in some scenes which I never thought possible.
In conclusion I enjoyed the movie a lot, but I do prefer the manga and the drama CDs after all. I'm so not used to the characters moving around LOL
I'm running out of battery, so on to the announcements that were made during today's event:
1. It was finally confirmed that the second movie is already being worked on (in fact some of the scenes in the trailers aren't in the first movie). The title will be The Storm Breaks. The release date is still open.
2. Saezuru volume 7 will get a special edition that comes with an OAD (Anime DVD) of Don't Stay Gold (which is probably the reason why it was stripped down to the bare minimum in the movie, basically one scene and the fact that Kageyama and Kuga became a couple because of Yashiro).
Battery is empty, so that's it for now.
