Gladiolus Amicitia 

Heir to the Crownsguard’s commanding Amicitia family and Shield who accompanied the True King Noctis on his journey. Trained from a young age and possessing the physical skills and battle techniques to carry the name of King’s Shield, he was sure he could protect Noctis. However, during a battle with the Empire he became painfully aware of his own weakness, and went in search of a way to become stronger. 

Gladiolus believed the time they were seeking mithril ore to repair the royal vessel would be his first and last chance. He decided to temporarily part with his friends. In order to be recognized as the King’s Shield, he resolved to undertake the Blademaster’s Training spoken of by the Crownsguard. Though this was a training fraught with danger from which Cor was the only one to ever return alive, Gladiolus would face it with all his might. It was said even his father Clarus had never attempted it. But if a Shield too weak to protect Noctis were to die, it would change nothing. What kind of Shield feared death? Prepared, he took on the training. 

Perhaps if Clarus had been alive, he would have stopped Gladiolus from doing this. Cor said as much. Clarus had not attempted the training, as he believed that Shields must protect their king and must not impetuously gamble with their lives. To lose one’s life in reckless battle was an act unbefitting a Shield. There was no shame in knowing one’s own weakness and living on in service of the king. Thus, one could put their life on the line for their king in a time of true need. His lost father, Cor, Gilgamesh… the words of men with true strength matured Gladiolus toward becoming the Shield of the Last King.
