okay iâve never made a tutorial before so bear with me please kthanks.Â
weâre gonna go from this
and as an added bonus, this
photoshop (i use cs5 but it works with other versions)
a screencap or picture (the higher the quality, the better)
a psd or basic coloring skills
i find it easier to edit the original image first and then transform it onto a smaller canvas, so thatâs what weâre going with today.
1. select your photo and open it in photoshop. you want one thatâs either hq or very close to it, without a lot of noise.Â
2. cut out your person. i use the pen tool as a personal preference but you can use the quick selection tool as well here. just cut out your victim y'all.
3. so now that we have our cut out, smart sharpen with an amount of 500%, radius 0.03px, remove gaussian blur, and more accurate on.
4. create a new group so everything will be neatly contained later on when you transform it to a smaller canvas.
5. on top of your first layer, create a new one. using the brush tool with hardness at 100%, color over the shirt. iâm using a more royal blue here (with blending mode eventually set to color) so it pops up for the tutorial, but you can use whatever one youâd like and iâll tell you how to change it later on without having to manually do it over again.***Â
you want to color clothes/hair on separate layers, so repeat the previous step as necessary.Â
and play with the blending mode! color, soft light, and overlay are the ones i use most.
6. to color hair, use the eye dropper tool to get a more exact match and brush over it. set that layer to color.
7. and now itâs time to color the whole thing. you can either use a psd here, or do it from scratch.
8. duplicate the cut out two times, giving you three layers of it in total.
9. leave layer 1 (the bottom one) on normal, opacity 100%. set the middle one to soft light, opacity 100%. and the top one at screen, opacity 98%.
10. then color the rest of the icon from scratch using levels, vibrance, brightness/contrast and selective colors or a psd.
11. so weâre colored! now we transform. open up a new document, canvas size 128x128 with a transparent background.
12. drag the group with everything in it over to the new canvas. hit ctrl + t.
13. holding the shift button, move around the points until your image is in the position you want.
14. color your background, and add your preferred gradient textures.
15. or you can make your own! create a new layer and drag it on top of your group, and using the paint bucket tool, fill it with solid black. set it to soft light, opacity 100%.
16. using the brush tool (with hardness at 100%) and the color white, paint over your image where light would naturally hit.
17. go to filter > blur > gaussian blur, and play around with the radius until itâs to your liking. i have mine set here at 28.0px.Â
18. save as a .jpg and there you go! youâve made an icon!
***to change the color of clothing or backgrounds,Â
add a hue/saturation layer above the one you would like to change, and move the slider around to the color of your choice.
and now we make cut out icons!
1. create a circle with the elliptical marquee tool.
2. right click and select inverse, and delete the excess outside the circle on each layer.
