No. Stop. I have a way better idea than that, let’s make a deal: A lovely, simple, easy 10% deal. You make 10% of shows have a lead character who is LGBT and you can start killing LGBT side characters in other shows (you don’t kill off the lead in shows, so the 10% of shows with LGBT leads would all be safe until the show ends). Seems fair right? Not even FAIR exactly, that’s such a small percentage. 10%! That’s NOTHING! 

A quick google search reveals that in 2014 (because I can’t be arsed to find more recent data and that’s right in a Daily Beast article that was really popular) there were 352 scripted TV shows in the US. That’s 352 shows with casts and budgets and scripts. 

10% of 352 rounded nicely is 35. 

I want 35 scripted shows on US television where the lead – not a supporting character, not a guest star, the LEAD, the TOP OF THE TICKET, THE BIGGEST HEAD ON THE POSTER – is LGBT. You could do one of each (l g b and t) and still have 31 slots left. 

Can you imagine the FIELD DAY that the LGBT community would have if next year included 35 shows with leads who were LGBT? How out of our minds excited we would be? What possibility for diversity of story and intersectionality and a wide range of stories would exist if we had 35 WHOLE SHOWS who’s leads were LGBT every year?

Ridiculous, when you put it that way. 10% is such a tiny fraction and yet right now people would LOSE THEIR MINDS for 35 shows with lead characters who fall somewhere under the LGBT umbrella. THR and Deadline and everyone would write think pieces about what a groundbreaking year it was for LGBT people, 35 SHOWS! WHAT A WEALTH. 

Meanwhile, cis straight leads drop from 352 to 317. You’d all still keep 317 leads all to yourself. We’re not asking for much. A TINY FRACTION of what you get all the time, every year, without ever asking.
