Steve loses his hearing, tells no one, and has been βfaking it until he makes itβ ever since.
Heβs kinda hoping that heβll wake up a lip reading expert one day but it hasnβt happened yet, but itβs fine.
Most of his friends talk at him instead of with him, so itβs okay if he misses some of the finer details. He doesnβt think heβs missing much until -
βDating?β He asks. βYouβre dating someone? Who?β
Eddie pauses and looks at him. His mouth moves to say, βYou.β
βMe?β
βI asked you out a month ago,β Eddie says. βYou said βsounds great.ββ
βOh,β Steve says, realization dawning slowly. βYeahh, thatβs what I say when I canβt figure out what you said.β
Eddie gives him a look like heβs bugging out, βWhat do you mean? I said it to your face.β
βWell, yeah,β Steve nods. βLip-reading isnβt like, a science. Itβs hard sometimes.β
βWhy are you reading my lips?!β
βBecause Iβm deaf!β
βYouβre deaf???β Eddie asks. He looks exasperated. βSince when.β
βSince before I had a boyfriend,β Steve replies, nudging him. βSorry. I didnβt really tell anyone about it. I still have a boyfriend, right?β
βYeah. Of course,β Eddie says and then curls his hand into a mimic of a telephone. He holds it to his ear before bringing his hands together into a gesture of a bird.
Steve frowns, βDonβt call Robin.β
Eddie looks directly at him and mouths, βIβm calling Robin.β
