patience  is  a  precious  commodity     ,     and  with  time  spent  on  multiple  dig  sites  awaiting  to  unearth  ancient  remains     ,    you  are  blessed  with  it  in  abundance.     though  that  did  not  stifle  the  sigh  upon  learning  the  mako  would  need  repairs  while  on  a  fairly  uninhabited  planet.     at  least  the  scenery  is  pleasant.     eyes  open  a  slight  wider  at  the  surprise  of  being  addressed     ,     but  handle  it  well.     social  skills  improving.          ❛  i  do  hope  not.  ❜          honest  assessment     ,     mouth  pulled  into  a  gentle  frown.          ❛  this  is  not  my  idea  of  fun.  ❜          

know  the  look  of  a  uniform     /     the  men  that  wear  them.     prey  to  you  but  they  also  preyed  upon  the  vulnerable.     loud  weapons  with  devastating  consequences.     know  their  type.     hunted  them  without  a  care     ,     they  were  in  your  woods  and  thus     ,     easy  prey.     so  you  snarl.     hatchet  brandish  though  there  is  little  intent  outside  of  the  trials.     meaningless  rules  when  you  should  just  be  able  to  hunt.     to  fight  and  win  against  the  lesser  beasts  the  roam  this  realm.

they  travel  through  the  void  of  space.     constellations  passing  by  as  the  normandy  navigated  the  stars.     for  a  moment  the  only  sound  is  the  hum  of  the  engines  and  the  harmonics  of  biotics     /     held  between  palms  as  an  ever  moving  orb  of  light.          ❛  you  believe  we  will  succeed     ,     shepard  ?  ❜          do  not  turn  to  face  him     ,     face  kept  passive.     unreadable.     but  you  had  agreed     /     swore  the  oath  despite  knowing  the  odds.     knowing  this  could  end  in  failure.     yet     ,     the  longer  you  remain  a  member  of  this  crew     ,     you  have  less  doubt  about  survival  chances.

Cassandra    MISSED    BEING    OUTSIDE.        It    got    so    claustrophobic    inside,        even    if    the    castle    itself    was    LARGE    AS    CAN    BE.        But    every    hallway    ended    eventually,        every    room    offered    NO    RESPITE    from    her    restlessness.        She    was    at    the    doorway    leading    to    the    courtyard,        it    was    open    just    a    crack    and    it    was    warm    enough    out.        Twenty    degrees.        GETTING    DANGEROUS,        but    she    could    always    slam    it    shut    if    it    became    too    much.

Amber    eyes    quietly    studied    WHAT    LITTLE    she    got    of    the    outside    world    from    this    doorway.        She    missed    summer.        She    missed    hunting.        She    even    missed    picnics    with    her    sisters    at    this    point.        SUCH    LONGING    TO    BE    OUT    caused    her    chest    to    ache.        Cassandra    knew    that    she    should    not    be    UNGRATEFUL.        But    it    was    difficult.

Her    mother’s    voice    snapped    her    out    of    her    reverie.        Gloved    hand    IMMEDIATELY    closed    the    door    and    she    looked    abashed.        Only    her    mother    could    bring    her    to    such    a    MEEK    STATE.        Cassandra’s    eyes    flicked    down    and    she    murmured    a   quiet    apology.        She    hated    WORRYING    her    mother,        which    is    why    she    was    trying    to    be    secretive    about    her    little    trips    to    the    door.        “        I    know.    It    won’t    happen    again.        I    just    miss    it.    ”

true     ,     your  words  had  been  those  of  abolishment.     but  more  so  out  of  fear  than  anger.     learning  early  on  that  sudden  drops  in  temperature  could  send  the  cadou  flies  that make  up  the  forms  of  your  daughters  into  a  dormant     ,     coma  like  state.     the  fear  that  had  gripped  your  heart  when  ignorantly  opening  those  windows  grips  your  heart  again.     though  the  pain  of  it  has  lessened  over  time.     they  are  no  longer  newly  born     /     weak  buzzing  of  flies.     they  are  now  a  cacophony.     violent  buzzing  and  bloodlust  intent.     your  daughters  are  strong.     but  that  does  not  mean  they  are  without  weakness.     like  the  desire  for  the  outdoors.     and  you  heart  aches  for   them  once  again.

maybe  it  is  time  you  left  the  castle  to  hunt  a  different  kind  of  prey.     to  see if  donna  can  stitch  together  animal  skin  and  bone  for  something  to  keep  your  daughters  warm  even  through  the  coldest  nights  of  the  winter  months.     but  no  need  to  get  cassandra’s  hopes  up  on  possibilities  without  results.     

fingernails  dig  into  the  soft  wood  of  the  desk     ,     burrowing  holes  into  the  surface.     little  gouges     /     nothing  an  insect  would  be  able  to  crawl  into.     too  shallow.     devoid  of  a  home.     you  were  once  a  home     /     once  writhing  and  pulsating  with  life.     worms  wriggled  inside  of  you     ,     holes  dug  into  your  flesh     /     warm  and  wet  places     ,     perfect  for  the  beings  that  called  you  home.     but  most  dead  now.     burned.     all  your  friends  discarded.     seek  out  new  ones.

there  is  not  always  hostility  to  others  in  this  makeshift  family.     rather     ,     you  are  quite  fond  of  the  lord  to  house  beneviento.     even  if  you  must  stoop  extra  low  to  fit  inside  her  doorways  and  feel  it  far  more  wise  to  sit  on  the  floor  than  any  of  the  furniture  about.     still     ,     you  appreciate  the  gentle  quiet  she  oft  employs.     (  though  the  doll  does  give  you  pause  at  times  )     donna  receives  an  easy  smile  delivered  upon  blood  red  lips. 

There was a tenderness to the touch which the Pig hadn’t experienced in what felt like a LIFETIME.  Really,  she hadn’t experienced ANY TOUCH besides that of brutality since she had gotten here.  And before her death,  there was NONE EITHER.  All little manipulations by the man she had worshipped.  But he NEVER CARED FOR HER.  She was a pawn,  and she was left without ANY HUMAN CONTACT BECAUSE OF IT.

She used to receive LUSTFUL STARES before her game,  but any touch which followed was never as soft as the Huntress’.  How strange it was that hands which caused so much death were the ones which made Amanda realize HOW TERRIBLY SHE LONGED for any gentle touch.  Her breath was shaking,  her gaze was INTENSELY FOCUSED on the other woman whilst the rest of her trembled.

Suddenly all of the SONGS ABOUT YEARNING made sense.

Her scars were a sign of her weakness.  The pain which she had CAUSED HERSELF from her own vices.  The result of divine punishment from the holy man she had devoted her life to,  LAID HER LIFE DOWN FOR.  They were repulsive,  as was everything else about Amanda.  Still, stained countenance was still attractive,  but it hid a TRULY ROTTEN NATURE.    “    Hmmm…  I don’t think so.  They are fucking disgusting.    ”    Just like HER.

you  yourself  are  a  mottled  mess  of  scars.     corner  of  your  lip  torn  away  by  sharp  claws     /     others  have  ripped  across  your  back  and  thighs.     various  smaller  nicks  along  hands  and  forearms.     expected.     the  life  of  a  hunter.     one  with  the  beasts.     scars  mean  you  have  survived     /     vanquished  a  foe     /     the  apex  predator.     and  amanda  is  no  prey  despite  her  thoughts  on  her  own  reminders  of  injuries  and  pain.

huff  at  her  words  as  if  discarding  them.     no  concept  of  disgust  besides  rotting     /     maggot  infested  remains.     of  a  failed  kill  and  having  to  eat  old  leftovers  and  dried  meat.     beauty  is  in  the  living.    

You’re somewhat surprised when the door does open, and the rush of relief almost makes you feel warm again. Shivering,  you stumble over the threshold, the warmth of the interior hitting your numb face like a blast of air, and you sink to your knees immediately, your legs giving out after so long in the snow. You take a moment to catch your breath, shivering beneath your coat, and lift your head to look up at your rescuer. It takes you a moment to realise you have to keep looking, the woman towering over you from a height that really shouldn’t be possible. 

The cold must’ve gotten to you worse than you’d realised. Blinking, you rest a hand on the door to pull yourself upright, trying to remember your manners. Even if you’re hallucinating, this woman did save you, and you manage a small smile, staring up into her face. ‘Thank you’, you murmur, ‘I’m sorry to trouble you’. As uncomfortable as it makes you, tugging your coat tighter around you to hide your injuries, you should offer an explanation. ‘My… my husband…’ the word tastes like bile in your mouth, and a shudder runs through you. ‘He… hurt me, and I had to flee. Unfortunately I didn’t think about the weather’. You have to lean further back against the door to meet her eyes, wondering at the way they gleam. ‘I’m Lillian. Thank you, for letting me in’.

welcome  her  in  with  a  wide  smile.     such  a  little     /     fragile  thing     ,     bundled  up  in  large  clothes  against  the  cold.     what  an  odd  thing  to  come  to  your  doorstep     ,     far  different  from  the  frightened  women  you  take  as  staff.     and  certainly  more  entertaining  than  the  rabble  of  the  village.     take  a  moment  to  cast  your  golden  eyes  upwards  towards  the  balcony  where  your  three  daughters  reside.     a  slight  wave  of  your  hand  telling  them  to  depart     ,     you  can  handle  this.

so  close  to  wrapping  a  hand  around  her  small  shoulders     ,     to  pull  her  further  into  the  castle.     a  castle  that  could  easily  become  her  tomb.     and  yet     ,     this  lillian     ,     decides  to  open  her  mouth.     potentially  saving  her  life.     she  does  not  see  the  smile  fall  before  it  is  replaced  with  a  facsimile.     tighter  around  the  corners.     do  place  a  hand  across  the  span  of  lillian’s  shoulders     ,     instead  steering  her  towards  one  of  the  many  bathrooms     (  it  just  happens  to  be  yours     /     still  such  potential  prey  but  you  are  now  eager  for  flesh  of  a  different  type  )
