          —   mai   will   never   admit   it,   but   she   hates   the   feeling   of   ty   lee   pulling   away.  there's   a   beat   as   mai's   eyes   focus   on   her   best   friend.   had   everything   changed   now?   it   still   felt   the   same   to   mai.   ❝   no,   because   i'd   already   have   dropped   everything   for   you,   ❞   mai   says   dryly.   she   sounds   so   calm,   but   on   the   inside,   she's   wondering   how   this   might   go   wrong.   will   ty   lee   see   (   much   like   zuko   had   )   that   she's   awful   with   feelings?   that   she   doesn't   know   how   to   express   most   emotions.   maybe   ty   lee   already   knew   all   of   that.   but   there's   a   little   pause   before   mai   asks:   ❝   —   what   did   that   mean   to   you?   i   mean…   do   you   like   me   like   that,   ty   lee?   ❞

                    𝐇𝐞𝐫     𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐞     𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬     𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧     𝐡𝐞𝐫     𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬     ,     and     she     can’t     seem     to     get     her     head     straight.     Fingers     tingle     where     they     had     once     brushed     against     Mai’s     cheekbones     ,     she’s     sure     the     colour     still     remained     splayed     across     her     face.     She     doesn’t     know     if     it’ll     ever     go     away     now.     A     small     grin     curls     up     her     lips     ,     and     the     typically     confident     circus     performer     has     to     look     away     with     a     giggle.     She     can’t     help     it     ,     the     way     her     heart     races     at     anything     her     friend     says.     Were     they     friends     anymore     ?     Could     they     be     ?     She     turns     back     to     her     ,     blinking     blankly     for     a     second.     ❝     Of     course     I     do     ,     ❞     

                    𝐓𝐡𝐞     𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬     𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞     ,     but     only     trained     ears     can     hear     the     tap     of     feet.     They     skid     to     a     stop     behind     him     ,     tiptoeing     until     her     chin     hooks     on     his     shoulder.     ❝     See     him     ?     ❞     The     winding     path     behind     them     disappears     around     the     corner     ,     a     shadow     slowly     coming     into     view.     Ty     Lee     had     been     trailing     him     for     a     while     ,     watching     from     her     perch     in     the     trees     as     the     traveller     trudged     forward.     She     had     no     intention     of     an     ambush     if     he     seemed     as     innocent     as     he     looked.     Backpack     over     his     shoulder     ,     just     crossing     ,     likely     back     to     a     hometown     ,     or     a     village     to     grab     supplies.     It     was     the     small     insignia     that     gave     it     away.     Dark     headband     ,     small     triangle.

❝     A     Yuyan     Archer.     ❞     She’d     recognize     the     symbol     anywhere     ,     they’d     learned     about     them     in     school.     Not     to     mention     --     she     knew     him.     But     that     was     a     fact     she     kept     to     herself     ,     one     Jet     didn’t     need     to     know.     ❝     Doesn’t     look     like     it     ,     but     he’s     probably     armed.     ❞     She     rests     an     arm     on     Jet’s     other     shoulder     ,     lazily     pointing     at     the     strap     across     his     chest.     Her     voice     holds     excitement     ,     maybe     too     much     at     the     mention     of     potential     danger.     It’s     been     a     while     since     they’d     come     across     anyone     really     worth     their     time.     It’s     a     shame     he     was     so     cute     ,     would’ve     been     cuter     if     he     paid     attention     to     her     when     they     were     younger.     Chalk     it     up     to     karma.
