she might not have been as practiced and polished a dancer as the others around the ballroom, not having been afforded the luxury of a lifetime of preparation for london society that surely included some form of dance lessons, if not from a teacher than from a family member with adequate experience. amy had no such luxuries, and had danced most often in the comforts of her own home with her sisters, and their dancing was much freer and much more spirited than anything anyone here in london was doing, at least under the watchful eyes of others. so, she was hesitant to readily take part. after all, not making a fool of herself was paramount. she was already here under unique circumstances; she had no reason to want to draw any more scrutinizing attention to herself.
so she was surprised to hear someone at her side, having kept herself to the outskirts of the ballroom to observe and occasionally chat with whomever her aunt wanted to introduce her to. not many people approached her independently, so she couldn't help her look of surprise when she turned to see who it was ( a man she did not recognize, though that was hardly a shock given her unfamiliarity with the people here ), brows raised and mouth dropped just slightly agape. "i do enjoy dancing," amy began with an acknowledging dip of her head. "i just..." she trailed off briefly, trying to think of how best to answer him without drawing too much attention to her inexperience. " ... am a bit out of practice, i suppose."

she beamed immediately, as compliments were prone to make her do; amy had always appreciated any appeal to her vanity. but there was something different about the way she smiled at him, something about the look in her eyes that wasn't sparked by just any nicety. little flecks of gold in green hues were lit aglow, warmed and sparkling, shining up at him above a grin that dimpled her cheeks and exuded joy - and not just because a handsome boy had just told her that the sun rose and set with her smile. while that was quite the compliment, and one that she would not demur from nor disagree with, it was really who it came from that made it land with such an impact. though the way she was looking back at him as if the sun in fact rose and set in fact with his smile likely gave it away, she rather adored charles bridgerton, and were he not so kind and charming and good, amy might have hated just how endeared to him she had come to feel in a relatively short amount of time. it might have made her so upset, for she had come to london with her aunt telling herself that she should not expect anything, that she was socially aware to know the implications of her station, that despite what aunt march might have hoped for her this would be nothing more than a wonderful opportunity to venture outside of her little village and improve her art and return much more cultured than when she had left. but then she had meant charles ... and now she was practically dreamy-eyed and grinning like a little fool. if his sincerity and poeticism had not made her so unadulteratedly joyous, she might have felt more consciously embarrassed, having prided herself during her time in london thus far on being completely poised and composed with no exceptions. she supposed he could be just the only one. "spoken like a true writer," she returned with an acknowledging dip of her head. " ... though i do quite appreciate the sentiment," amy added, softening just briefly before leaning into he light he'd sparked within her once again, shoulders straightening proudly and dimples creasing just slightly more. "and do not worry, i shall never forget."

* ( THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO / SENTENCE PROMPTS
people think that intimacy is about sex. but intimacy is about truth.
never let anyone make you feel ordinary.
i’m under absolutely no obligation to make sense to you.
don’t ignore half of me so you can fit me into a box.
don’t do that.
it’s always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one.
sometimes reality comes crashing down on you.
heartbreak is a loss. divorce is a piece of paper.
when you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
the world doesn’t give things, you take things.
you have to find a job that makes your heart feel big instead of one that makes it feel small.
please never forget that the sun rises and sets with your smile.
you’re the only thing on this planet worth worshipping.
be wary of men with something to prove.
the cruelest thing you can do to someone you love, give them just enough good to make them stick through a hell of a lot of bad.
you wonder what it must be like to be a man, to be so confident that the final say is yours.
i think you’re brilliant.
i think you’re tough.
do yourself a favor and learn to grab life by the balls.
don’t be so tied up in trying to do the right thing when the smart thing is so painfully clear.
you can be sorry about something and not regret it
the world respects people who think they should be running it.
if i want things to change, i have to change how i do things. and probably drastically.
people are messy, and love can be ugly.
i’m inclined to always err on the side of compassion.
you can’t tell a single thing about a person’s true character if you both want the same thing.
no one is just a victim or a victor. everyone is somewhere in between.
just go knowing you were loved, that i will never forget you.
you were my best friend.
nobody deserves anything. it’s simply a matter of who’s willing to go and take it for themselves.
why have i spent so long settling for less when i know damn well the world expects more?
taking pride in your beauty is a damning act.
forgiveness is different from absolution.
sometimes divorce isn’t an earth-shattering loss. sometimes it’s just two people waking up out of a fog.
if there are all different types of soul mates, then you are one of mine.
i am absolutely positive that i need you more than i’ve ever needed another living soul.
i loved you so much that i thought you were the meaning of my life.
i thought that people were put on earth to find other people, and i was put here to find you.
i don’t want to be meant for someone like you.
that’s the part i was stuck in, the part where you accept the apology because it’s easier than addressing the root of the problem.
it will be the tragedy of my life that i cannot love you enough to make you mine.
it’s a hard business, reconciling what the truth used to be with what the truth is now.
you’re an idealist and a romantic, and you have a beautiful soul.
i wish the world was ready to be the way you see it.
i wish that the rest of the people on earth with us were capable of living up to your expectations. but they aren’t.
the world is ugly, and no one wants to give anyone the benefit of the doubt about anything.
i love you too much to let you live only for me.
i’m cynical and i’m bossy, and most people would consider me vaguely immoral.
i spent half my time loving her and the other half hiding how much i loved her.
it shouldn’t be wrong, to love you. how can it be wrong?
i think being yourself—your true, entire self—is always going to feel like you’re swimming upstream.
you could be a nobody living in a cardboard box, and i’d still love you.
i simply didn’t care. it cost so much, caring. i didn’t have any currency to spend on it.
some marriages aren’t really that great. some loves aren’t all-encompassing.
the media are going to tell whatever story they want to tell. they always have. they always will.
charisma is charm that inspires devotion.
you’re not really famous if anybody still likes you.
you should know this about the rich: they always want to get richer. it is never boring, getting your hands on more money.
the truth is, praise is just like an addiction. the more you get it, the more of it you need just to stay even.
you have to push people’s boundaries and not feel bad about it. no one is going to give you anything if you don’t ask for it.
when you’ve been bested, sometimes it’s good to recognize it and move on.
no one goes around throwing caution to the wind unless the wind is blowing their way.
the easiest lie to tell is one you know the other person desperately wants to be true.
pictures speak very loudly. in general, we can almost never shake what we see with our eyes.
we all can’t go around treating people like dog shit and then expecting that a simple i’m sorry erases it.
guilt is a feeling i’ve never made much peace with. i find that when it rears its head, it brings an army.
when i feel guilty for one thing, i start to see all the other things i should feel guilty for.
accepting that something is true isn’t the same as thinking that it is just.

do it. be bold.
we must continue our ruse until i’ve found my match.
me, unavailable; you, desirable.
i trusted you more than anyone in this world, and you took advantage.
you do not know me, but i know you.
you have no idea what it is to have one’s entire life reduced to a single moment.
is this not lovely? all of us together again.
an expert in the art of the swoon.
i wish to be entertained.
it would be better if you refrain from thinking about me at all.
lovely indeed. we should tempt scandal more often.
the social season is upon us.
your love is an unrequited fantasy.
i cannot stop thinking of you.
i am anything but interested in you.
it is more than just your honor at stake.
i write in my diary which is not the same as writing in my novel.
a pairing like that would be most enchanting indeed.
the season’s diamond, even more precious and rare a stone than previously thought?
stare into my eyes.
is it awful that i’m enjoying it?
if you desire the sun and the moon, all you have to do is go out and shoot at the sky.
we could pretend to form an attachment.
if there is a scandal, i shall uncover it.
must our only options be to squawk and settle or to never leave the nest?
all is fair in love and war.
there is nothing you cannot do.
my honor is not for sale.
if this is to work, we must appear madly in love.
i’m aware of your reputation.
do not tell me that is another scandal sheet.
you’ve always amused me.
we find ourselves seated next to each other. i’d think you’d be happy about that.
marriage has it joys, but it also brings with it its special trials.
it’d be better if you refrain from thinking about me at all.
you do not know me, and never shall.
you do not humiliate the one you love.
i’m aware of your reputation and i am anything but interested in you.
what if i want to fly?
the ones we love have the power to inflict the greatest scars.
every presumptuous mother in town will leave me alone and every suitor will be looking at you.
you do not trick the one you love.
if you desire the sun and the moon, all you have to do is go out and shoot at the sky.
let it be known that if there is a scandal, i shall uncover it.
you think that just because i’m a woman, i’m incapable of making my own choices?
love, conquers all.
you can choose to love me as much as i love you.
i am tired of pretending.
from the mornings you ease, to the evenings you quiet, to the dreams you inhabit my thoughts of you never end.
i cannot continue acting as if i do not love you. because i do.
i love all of you.
i cannot be your fool again.
the brighter a lady shines, the faster she may burn.
we chose to love each other every single day.
pride, it will cost you everything and leave you with nothing.
i am looking out for myself.
you don’t deserve to breathe the same air as her.
you must simply marry the man who feels like your dearest friend.
i am ensuring my own future. because i know in my heart i know that there is no one else who ever will.
you do not lie to the one you love.
to meet a beautiful woman is one thing, but to meet your best friend in the most beautiful of women is something entirely apart.
circumstances change, ladies. sometimes over night.
her heart is no matter, as long as her hand remains free.
you cannot assure me of everything.
i will always protect you.
i believe i should like to stay.
i believe you should like to go.
what others should ever want such damaged goods now?
you have no idea what it is to be a woman.
you are perfection itself.
what? you don’t love me for my subtlety.
would you rather die than marry me?
i am yours, i have always been yours.
it is you i cannot sacrifice.
i burn for you.
it pains me you should think every compliment a mockery.
i ask you, can the ends ever justify such wretched means?

❝ a bevy of suitors flocking about and you stationed here, ❞ eyes wander across the dimmed gardens illuminated by nothing but the moon’s glow. his hands are positioned behind his back as he just barely tips forth, the woman’s ear compromisingly near. ❝ certainly i must wonder why that is. ❞
@sheartiste , amy march. ♡’d.
her brows raised immediately, surprised that she was being approached. having no illusions about being a bit out of place here, amongst a crowd of people whose stations were all considerably higher than her own, amy had taken a decidedly more reserved approach to her first night in london society. she remained at the edges of the room, more or less under her aunt’s watchful eye, making polite conversation with those whom the aforementioned march introduced her to but otherwise wanting to make the first impression of a polite and well-mannered guest and newcomer. though she liked to think she managed it rather well outwardly, the whole thing was a bit overwhelming, and she intended to steal just a moment or two outside alone in the fresh air. that was, until, the man quite literally at her ear appeared, startling her for more than one reason. “i needed some fresh air,” amy answered simply, mindful of how she reacted and responded; there was no need to delve into why she was not terribly concerned with how any suitors inside might think of her. “certainly i must wonder why you are not amongst the bevy inside, entertaining all of the eligible young women.”

amy had arrived in london wide-eyed and enthusiastic and awed - this was a vacation, after all, a trip outside of her small town to see the world and become more cultured and perhaps cultivate her artistic skills just a bit. while her aunt march had chosen her to bring to the city out of all of her sisters because she thought her the most suited for high society and the most likely to make an advantageous match therein, amy did not want to come out of this looking or feeling like a fool, and kept a perspective that anyone at the fanciest parties in london taking a genuine interest in the poor girl from the tiny village would simply be a fairytale. and despite all the time she was spending with charles bridgerton, a genuinely sweet and intelligent ( and undeniably very handsome ) boy and how deeply she enjoyed all of it, she still refused to entertain any notions that he might take a serious interest in her and that their companionship might develop into something more.
she couldn’t deny that he seemed to enjoy her company. after all, so much of the time they had spent with one another had been at his invitations. but something about his question raised amy’s suspicions - and, for a moment, made her almost hyper aware of the butterflies in her stomach and the warm feeling that spread from her chest. though she would not be so bold as to outright admit it to him without explicit indication of similar feelings, she supposed such sensations had become such regular occurrences that she didn’t even register them without something calling her attention to it, always preoccupied with whatever he was saying or doing or whatever laugh or smile or dance they were sharing. if being here with him, whatever he might mean by that, meant that she would feel like that all the time, amy thought she would be quite happy indeed. “i think i would,” she answered matter-of-factly, offering a small but still bright and confident smile. “i would would be quite happy to be able to go on walks with you and sit and sketch while you write and do all the lovely things we do together in the future.” she sighed gently, her gaze dropping momentarily as she clasped her hands in front of her. “it’s a shame i will not be staying, isn’t it?”

“i have never been much of a pretender.” ever since she was a young girl, she’d worn her emotions so clearly on her sleeve to the point that it had gotten her into some trouble. that, and there were certainly times where amy had just simply been a bit more blunt than the standards proper manners normally allowed. as she matured, amy had realized there were times when it would be advantageous to try and mask at least some of it — clearly she was in need of some practice in the actual execution. “i have too expressive a face, i suppose.” it was true that she likely had built up expectations for these london social events that were a bit too high in the anticipation of her arrival in the city with her aunt. but she found herself feeling particularly deflated after she struggled to fit in well enough, between her lack of pedigree and her lack of experience in the upper echelon of high society. it was frustrating, given how perfect a party guest she usually knew herself to be. and how embarrassing it was that she’d been caught unintentionally moping, for lack of better terms, by the viscount bridgerton. amy looked to him with an arched brow, bordering curiously and suspiciously. “have you some experience with such a thing? some advice you can impart, perhaps?”

“well, you have to help me fix it!” although amy did indeed have good intentions, feeling not only that her mother deserved something special but that she had some self-redemption to do as of late, she quite often had visions of special gifts and projects that were a bit grander than anything she might be able to realistically execute. like her ill-fated foot cast for laurie, this birthday cake for marmee was no exception. she was no baker, and perhaps if she hadn’t thought that decorating it might give her a chance to show off her artistic abilities she might have chosen something else anyways, but she had assumed following a recipe couldn’t be too difficult. but now their kitchen was filling with smoke, the cake ( and quite possibly the pan it had been cooking in ) was ruined, and amy had been sent flying into a panic. naturally, she wasn’t going to get her own hands dirty in this mess; jo had always been much more fearless when it came to getting down into such metaphorical trenches, anyways, so she simply stood, waiting for her sister to take action, gesturing towards the disaster she had created. she glanced furtively over her shoulder in three directions, knowing that no matter who might walk in on them, it would get them into some kind of reprimanding. she didn’t think she could afford any more of that. “and quickly, or we’ll get in such trouble!”

amy blinked, pursing her lips just slightly, trying not to make her surprise too obvious and too easy to read on her expression. it was clear that the duke had taken some interest in her, and while she did think herself to be an objectively interesting and appealing person, she knew enough about the social hierarchy of london to feel some confusion as to what exactly someone of his stature saw in her. his appearance at her aunt march's london home was a surprise in itself, let alone the fact that he came not only looking for amy, but specifically to invite her to accompany him to the event of the evening. but her shock and awe aside, there was an undeniably giddy feeling that his invitation so immediately sparked within her; something fluttered in her stomach and generated a warmth that traveled all the way up to her chest, that made her cheeks turn pink ( and made her clench her jaw as if that would do anything to stop her from blushing so embarrassingly ). she rolled her shoulders back and cleared her throat, straightening up a bit in an effort to seem a bit more composed. "if you request my company," amy began, allowing a bit of a smile, a small one that lifted the corners of her lips enough to just slightly dimple her cheeks, "i shall be happy to oblige."

she could not remember ever having felt her heart both swell and splinter in the same beat. how could she not all but melt at his feet at his promise to await her return, delivered as earnestly and sincerely as she knew it to be? but at the same time, how could she not immediately blink back the stinging in her eyes brought on by quickly welling tears, knowing that if he were to wait for her, he might be waiting forever? amy could not ask him to do that. there was no promise of a second trip back to london even before this first one had been cut short. now, given the circumstances she was returning under, such a thing seemed even less likely. and that made such a heartbreak even more difficult to bear.
amy steeled herself, rolling her shoulders back and clearing her throat and exhaling a short breath, all in preparation just to meet charles' gaze again. had she not taken a moment to gain some composure, she knew that even just a fleeting glance into his eyes would have her in pieces. "i cannot ask you to do that," she answered, tone gentle enough to convey the affection she so felt for him but firm enough to let him know she would not be swayed. "and i will not, for there is no promise that i will return. and should i ask you to, i would surely be asking you to give up the possibility of such happiness and adoration and bliss that you so deserve." amy fought the urge to mention just how jealous she would be of whomever would be the one to provide him with such things, even if they would only ever be some imagined figment of her imagination, a conjured image from her own envious subconscious of whomever they might be. a younger version of her might have acquiesced, might have let them exist in this odd sort of limbo just so she could know she could still somehow hang onto him. but she had grown, and now she could see how harmfully selfish such a thing would be. instead, she forced a small smile and placed a hand delicately over his, her lips pursing just slightly and just briefly as she fought another wave of emotion. "and i have far too much affection for you to ever even think of doing such a thing."
