I think the pain we feel at the end of a relationship isn’t so much the loss of someone we love as it is the fear of change and embracing a reality different from the one we’ve grown used to. We tend to go about relationships in such a way that our significant others become such a vital part of who we are; they become an essential part of our every day life. So when a relationship ends, so too does that dynamic—that presence in our lives. Suddenly we find ourselves going through the days with something missing. It is natural for us to miss someone we were once in a relationship with, but I think what’s even more demanding is the adjustment required to adapt to a new reality.
