While great white sharks are most well known for leaping out of the water (known as breaching), shortfin mako sharks hold the record for the highest breach, breaching 9m (~30ft) from the surface.

The tide goes out twice a day, changing the conditions of the reef dramatically. As the water departs, so do the big sharks as it's now too shallow for them to survive in. The small epaulette takes advantage of this brief moment in the reef's life cycle. No longer at risk of being someone else's dinner, it can focus on finding its own.
