I am also thinking abt Collie Parker and how his back is also turned to the boys when he dies.

That just before he died he was turning to them in hopes that they would help and join his rebellion. Believed that they would. but the boy’s don’t/can’t and have to keep walking leaving Collie alone.

Collie who has to sing his own death chant because no one else is there to sing it for him. He must do this on his own. Collie Parker who takes his own life before the soldiers can, looking to them in defiance before he kill’s himself whilst his back remains faced to the boys

I wonder if the boys know that he shot himself and not a soldier.

I’m pretty sure Art saw which is infinitely worse coz Ray tells him not to look. Maybe even assuming that he thought Art might run back to Collie like he did with Hank </3
