Samm and I have been friends since high school and she asked me nearly a year before her October wedding if I could turn her mom’s wedding headpiece into a hair accessory for her own special day. I said yes right away and was honored to do so, but then I realized it was my first time taking some old and transforming it into something new since I usually work with craft materials from scratch. I felt a responsibility to treat both things with integrity and felt afraid to start the process, but once I did I realized I just had to approach the disassembling the same way I did the assembling…with care and time, but not fear. I couldn’t make the new hair piece if I stayed fearful of touching the old, and that felt like a larger lesson for myself even outside of this lovely beaded context.
