From the Black Mountain College Museum and Art Center Bookstore on Instagram:
βI arrived [at BMC] with a suitcase full of βpeasantβ blouses and dirndl skirts, as well as an evening gown, run up for me in Guatemalan cotton by a gay man in the Village. The gown was for 'proms,β events I assumed were an essential part of going away to college. I soon realized that my clothes were totally unsuited for life on a mountain, where the costume de rigueur was Levis, a tee-shirt and bare feet.β -Harriet Sohmers Zwerlingβ β
