Do french call each other with nickname often? I see many fic call marinete with "Mari" or just "nette" sometimes "nettie". Are those mentioned nickname common to use irl?
Hey there! It depends who and which name, but it happens yes!
For Marinette, I don't think we'd use "Nette" or "Nettie" though. Mari probably has a higher chance of being a nickname used.
Now, sometimes we give each other nicknames that have nothing to do with our main name, but again it depends on people's personalities when it comes to who gives the nickname. I know I personally rarely give nicknames to people, but my sister gives her friends the most what-the-hell nicknames based on their name to tease them (kind of like Chat Noir with "Buguinette", except Buguinette is an understandable nickname while my sister's are...not hahaha)
Some people also give nicknames based on the last name.
Most of the times (but it doesn't work for every name at all), nicknames are like this :
first syllabe of the name, repeated once (less common depending on the name) or two times (more affectionate/adds some teasing too)
ex: Johanna could be nicknamed Jo or Jojo; Chloé could be nicknamed Chlo or Cloclo
name + "-ou" or "-ette" (girl)/"-et" (boy) at the end (those are affectionate, and some have a teasing edge to them as well)
ex: Marion could be nicknamed Marionette; Camille could be nicknamed Camillou or Camillette; Max could be nicknamed Maxou
name + "(ou)nette" (girl) / "(ou)net" (boy), or "chou" or "chounet(te)" (those are ways of teasing someone affectionately, in the same vein as "Buguinette". However, if someone who doesn't appreciate you uses them, it's usually to make fun of you)
To give you a clearer idea, if we have a look at the main characters of ML, these are some kind of nicknames based on their name that could be common:
Marinette: Not too many common nicknames. Mari, Mama (rare), Marinou (teasing/affectionate), Marinouchou (affectionate/teasing++), Marinouille (rare and could be either teasing ++++ if from a friend after she said something silly, or mean if from Chloé for instance. It's the equivalent of Marinoodle, but saying someone is "nouille" means dope/dumb/dopey)

Alya: Not too many common nicknames. Al (rare), Alyanou (teasing/affectionate), Alynou (same idea),
Nino: Not too many common nicknames. Nini (rare), Ninounet (affectionate/teasing++), Ninouchou (affectionate/teasing ++)
Alix: Alixou (affectionate), Al (rare)
Kim: Not too many common nicknames. Kimounet (if you really want to be teasing/affectionate). "Kiki" wouldn't exactly work as it's a childish way to refer to a penis (like "willy") and how kids usually call it, so it's possible some other guys call him that to tease him but it would be once in a while and not a regular one for sure.
Max: Maxou, Maxounet (affectionate/teasing)
Ivan: Not too many common nicknames. Ivounet if you want to tease him affectionately
Rose: Not too many common nicknames. Some people might call her "petite fleur" (little flower) because her name can be translated by either "rose" or "pink"
Juleka: Ju (Rose refers to her as such in Guiltrip in the French version), Juju
Kagami: Not too many common nicknames. There could have been "Kaka" except it sounds exactly like "caca" in French which means "poop", so no one would nickname her that. Mimi might work, Gaga too for fun.
Marc: Not too many common nicknames.
Sabrina: Not too many common nicknames. Sab, Sabrinou (affectionate/teasing)
Félix: Félixou, Félixounet, Félichou (all these to tease him affectionately)
