Robert Rankin

Robert is the author of 33 fantasy/humour novels, and is still going strong! He started writing in the late 1970’s, and his books are a mixture of science fiction, fantasy, the occult, urban legends, running gags, metafiction, steampunk and outrageous characters. The majority of his books are set in either Brentford (and the surrounding area) or Brighton. Many of his characters appear in multiple books, either as main characters or as cameos. Robert tends to write trilogies or multi-book stories. In recent years his work has become widely recognised and followed throughout the world… the US in particular falling in love with his teo Eddie The Bear novels (The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse and The Toyminator).

Robert has a vibrant fan following, through the fan club SproutLore, and he is widely known for his constant and enthusiastic interaction with the fans, via his website forum, or the many events he attends every year.

Sophie Aldred

In 1987, Sophie was cast as Ace in Doctor Who. Her tenure on the show spanned the last nine stories of the programme’s original run, which ended in 1989.

In January 1992, she appeared in The Stranger More than a Messiah.

Both before and since Doctor Who, Sophie has had a varied and busy television career, particularly in children’s programming, where she has presented educational programmes such as Corners, Melvin and Maureen’s Music-a-grams (which ran from 1992 to ‘96), Tiny and Crew (which she presented, 1995–99), the BBC series Words and Pictures (since 1993), and also CITV paranormal show It’s a Mystery in 1996. She also played the character Minnie The Mini Magician from Series 8 onwards on CITV’s ZZZap! between 1999 and 2001.

Sophie has presented and sung in several BBC Schools Radio series, including Singing Together, Music Workshop, Time and Tune and Music Box. She has also performed on radio and in the theatre. She has also reprised her role as Ace in the charity special Dimensions in Time and the Doctor Who audio plays produced by Big Finish Productions.

Throughout the 2000s she has worked extensively as a voice-over artist for television advertisements, and has also provided voices for animated series such as Bob the Builder, Sergeant Stripes and Dennis & Gnasher.

She co-wrote the hardback reference book, Ace, The Inside Story of the End of An Era with Mike Tucker, published by Virgin Publishing in 1996.

Sophie provided voices for the 2009 series Dennis and Gnasher, including that of title character Dennis the Menace.

As of 2012 Sophie was providing the voice of Tom in Tree Fu Tom, a BBC children’s series. The series’ other main voice actor, David Tennant (who voices Twigs), previously played the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who. In November 2013 she appeared in the one-off 50th anniversary comedy homage The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

Sylvester McCoy

Sylvester McCoy is a Scottish actor. As a comic act and busker he appeared regularly on stage and on BBC Children’s television in the 1970s and 80s. 

Notable television appearances included roles in Vision On (where he played Pepe/Epep, a character who lived in the mirror), an O-Man in Jigsaw and Tiswas. He also appeared in Eureka, often suffering from the inventions of Wilf Lunn and as Wart, assistant to StarStrider in the CITV series of the same name.

He is familiar to most people as the seventh incarnation of the Doctor in the long-running science fiction television series Doctor Who from 1987 to 1989 – the final Doctor of the original run – and a brief return in a television film in 1996.

More recently, he played the wizard Radagast the Brown in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of The Hobbit.

Robert Duncan McNeill

Robert Duncan McNeill is an American actor, producer, movie director, and television director who is best known for his role as Lieutenant Tom Paris on the show Star Trek: Voyager.

He enjoyed early success as a professional actor, winning the role of Charlie Brent on All My Children and starring in the feature film Masters of the Universe. A guest role in “The First Duty”, an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, in which he played Nick Locarno, a Starfleet Academy cadet and squad leader who pressures fellow cadet Wesley Crusher into covering up their wrongdoings. He would later become a Star Trek regular in 1995 on Star Trek: Voyager, on which he played Tom Paris, a Starfleet officer with a backstory similar to Locarno’s.

McNeill began his directing career with several episodes of Voyager. He then wrote, produced, and directed two award-winning short films, The Battery and 9 mm of Love and began to direct other episodic television. While he has since performed as a guest star on television shows like The Outer Limits and Crossing Jordan, McNeill is now focusing on his directing career, helming episodes of Dawson’s Creek, Everwood, Star Trek: Enterprise, Dead Like Me, The O.C., One Tree Hill, Las Vegas, Summerland, and Supernatural. In 2007, he directed the season 5 premiere of Las Vegas, the pilot of Samantha Who? (which features his Star Trek: Voyager co-star Tim Russ) and then signed on as a producer-director of the NBC show Chuck.

James Cosmo

James Cosmo has accepted our invitation to attend the 21st SF Ball. A staple of British television, with credits in hundreds of television shows, Cosmo made a name for himself playing Scottish “tough guy” characters, often with a screen-dominating charisma.

He is best known for his film roles as Angus MacLeod in Highlander, Campbell in Braveheart and as Father Christmas in the adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Over the years he has also had roles in other films such as Trainspotting, The Last Legion, 2081. He appeared in Troy with future Game of Thrones cast members Sean Bean and Julian Glover. He also appeared in Take the High Road as Alex Geddes from 1982 until 1983. He appeared as Lieutenant colonel Philip Drysdale in the 7th series of Soldier, Soldier. Manu Intiraymi

He made his debut in the movies in the film Senseless working with Penelope Spheeris and Marlon Wayans. Other film work includes a starring role in Whatever It Takes as “Dunleavy”, plus supporting roles in Orange County, Pearl Harbor, and J. Edgar.

Most recently Manu starred on the final season of One Tree Hill as the vicious villain “Billy”. He has also appeared on well-known television series, like Las Vegas, 24, King of Queens, Jag, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Unhappily Ever After, Smart Guy, and Pacific Blue.

Manu’s work as Icheb in Star Trek: Voyager began in early 2000, in the episode “Collective”, and soon transformed into a large recurring role that placed him on the show in season six and through to the final episode of season seven.

Manu will be with us all weekend.

Julian Seager

Julian Seager has recently been cast in TV shows such as Poldark and Doc Martin and receives leading roles in Independent movies.

Julian also voice acts and appears on a very well known video game. He has had small roles in big projects such as Dr Who, Thor 2, Worlds End, Guardians of the Galaxy, Malificent, Merlin, Atlantis, Da Vincis Demons, The Muppets and many more!

Julian is also a passionate geek and has been one as long as he can remember. He loves films, TV shows, anime, cosplay, comics, novels, gaming and medieval weapons.

Julian will be with us all weekend.

SFB Events is super pleased to announce that Reload comics will be with us for SFBall 21.

Reload! Comics is an award nominated, independent publisher from Bournemouth, who have been established since 2010. Since then Reload has gone above and beyond to release great independent comic book titles, and have lined up a string of convention appearances in Bournemouth, London, Birmingham, Germany, Chicago & New York.

Reload’s Flagship title Jericho has gained a strong following (including celebrity comic book readers) and is being adapted into an animated feature set for release in 2015.

But to leave it there wouldn’t do the Reload team justice. With forthcoming titles such as the controversial theological thriller The Fallen: Between Angels & Insects, The Survivors, My Beautiful Secret, I-Cru, A Murder Of Flies, and many others, Reload are beginning to show the signs of becoming a great publishing house for comic book fans who not only want to support the independent scene, but want a British alternative to Marvel and DC, with a hint of Vertigo and Image.
