i used to hate being indian.

it showed up in smaller things—wishing my food didn’t smell, laughing at racist jokes, avoiding my language in public, and comparing skin color with my friends. i was embarrassed of how people saw it, and how they would see me because i was indian.

somewhere along the way, i starting changing myself to be as non-indian as possible: i stopped bringing indian food in my lunch and stopped speaking hindi.

being darker skinned meant that you're ugly. and so i dreamed of being a white girl with blue eyes and blonde hair. they were who i grew up seeing everywhere, anyway. that was real beauty, wasn't it? that was the only way i would make it anywhere.

but eventually i realized: "why am i running from who i am?"

i opened my eyes to see there are so many beautiful people out there who didn't fit my old definition of beauty.

now after years of trying to ignore it, i've decided to incorporate my culture into my life if i can. i am proud to say that i am no longer ashamed of my culture and being indian.

but there was a time where i used to hate being indian, and all i can hope for is that that time never returns.

i love being indian. no one should hate who they are.

so even though i'm not a fan of india currently, i accept that i am indian and i no longer try to hide it.
