An Overview of Note-Taking Styles

I’ve seen quite a few posts that claim to have tips about learning Korean vocab, and while they have some solid advice, they’re usually pretty general and could be applied to learning any language. As someone who has learned 2,000 Korean words in the past year (but is still very much a learner), I thought I would give some advice for how to learn Korean words specifically–foregoing the traditional advice that one can find anywhere. (Note: I do not live in Korea; this advice can apply to learners living anywhere.)

Learn with audio. I use the AwesomeTTS Add-on for Anki as well as the audio files from HTSK (I’m learning from their word lists and highly recommend them) when available to integrate both text and audio into my flashcards. Using audio helps you to learn the word as an actual word and not as just a series of syllables. After adding audio to my cards I was much better able to remember the words. And of course, learning with context is important!

Learn the alphabet. It’s essential. Using flashcards with audio will help you to learn pronunciation rules as well as how these rules change when syllables come together.

Learn -하다 verbs and adjectives as verbs and adjectives, not nouns. This can’t apply to every -하다 verb and adjective, but take for example 불평하다. If you were to learn 불평 first, you might not know that it could be combined with -하다 to create a verb, especially if you aren’t familiar with Chinese characters (hanja). However, if you knew that 불평하다 meant to complain, then you could guess that 불평 might mean a complaint.

Study hanja. You don’t have to memorize how to write the characters, but learning what certain syllables mean can help you to guess (and remember) the meanings of many words.

Learn from word lists targeted toward Korean learners. When I first started learning Korean, I used list of “commonly used words” geared towards language learners in general. One of the words was “cold”, which has two problems: 1. I translated it as 감기 (a cold that you catch), not knowing if that meant the disease or the adjective; and 2. There are many Korean words that could translate to “to be cold”. Using the right word lists will teach you the correct definitions for every Korean word.

Don’t let your vocab get too far ahead of your grammar. At the beginning, your grammar resource(s) will likely provide you with all the vocab you need as you learn. It’s much easier to expand your vocabulary once you know basic grammar.

Don’t be too concerned with learning slang. In Korean especially, Internet and slang phrases come and go quickly, so unless you have Korean friends to teach you (or you spend lots of time on the Korean Internet), I would recommend spending your time learning standard Korean words. If you’re curious about up-to-date slang though, this blog is amazing.

Talented YouTubers have used software to create rendered environments with layered sounds, with many of these ambiences inspired from fantasy to others based in reality. Hello! This is Admin Hyun! Today’s Korean grammar lesson is on 어말어미. 어말어미 is important in understanding Korean sentences because it comes at the last part. There is a Korean saying “한국말은 끝까지 들어봐야 안다”(You need to listen to the last word of Korean sentences) which means you may misunderstand the intention of the speaker if you do not.

어말 어미 Eo-mal eo-mi Final endings

Final endings are morphemes(형태소) that are added to the last part of verb stems(어간) to make the verb have different meanings and usages. For example, 보다 (see) can be divided into 보 + 다. Here, 보 is the stem of the word which has the meaning (see) and does not change. ~다 is the sentence ending which gives it’s original form. If you use ~여요? (can you see?), ~세요(please see) or ~고(see and~) after 보, you can add different meanings to the verb 보다. 

Final endings can be mainly classified into 종결 어미(sentence ending), 연결 어미(conjunctive ending) or 전성 어미(derivational ending). When a final ending completes a sentence, it is called 종결 어미 (sentence ending) but when the ending connects a following sentence with another sentence, it is a 연결 어미(conjunctive ending).

In the example above, a sentence that ends with 보여요? is complete and can be called a 종결 어미(sentence ending). Sentence endings are important to understand the meaning of a sentence because there are many different endings, and it may be difficult to learn for beginners. There are mainly five types of final endings –

평서형(statement)

의문형(question)

명령형(order)

청유형(request)

감탄형(exclamation). 

Let’s take a look at some examples with following sentence: 엄마가 노래하다 (Mom sings)

연결 어미 Yeon-gyeol eo-mi Conjunctive endings

A sentence that ends with 보고, and has another sentence to follow is called a 연결 어미(conjunctive ending). For instance, 잘 보고, 다시 해보세요 (Look carefully and try again) has two sentences which are connected by a conjunctive ending ~고 (see and~). There are three types of conjunctive endings – 대등(coordinate), 종속(subordinate) and 보조(Auxiliary)

전성 어미 Jeon-seong eo-mi Derivational/modifier endings

Derivational endings or modifier endings are used to transform a verb into a noun, adjective or adverb by using endings such as ~기 (to look), ~ㄴ(looking~), ~게(will see).

PHRASES:

지금 and 이제 are both super common words, but speakers of other languages can find them a bit confusing at first if their language doesn’t make a similar distinction and thus translates them both as the same word (English is one of those languages; in English, we would use “now” for both of these Korean words). Let’s take a quick look at the two and how they’re different.

지금

지금 is “now” in the sense of “at this present moment.” Let’s say that you have to catch a flight with your family and someone is holding up the process. Time is ticking away and it’s getting critical. In that case, you would use 지금. You could tell the slowpoke “지금 가야 돼!” (We have to go now!)

이제

이제 is “now” in contrast to some other time. Let’s say that your friend invites you to a concert by an artist you aren’t familiar with and at first you turn down the offer, saying you don’t want to go. Later in the evening, you look up the artist on the internet and find out that their music is your style and you feel that you actually do want to go to the concert. You call your friend and say you want to go, and they ask you to explain yourself. You say,

“가고 싶지 않았는데 가수를 좀 알아봤고 이제 가고 싶어.” (I didn’t want to go, but I looked up the artist and now I want to go.)

극장이 어디에 있어요? - Where is the cinema? 길을 건너서 똑바로 가세요 - Please cross the road then go straight  커피숍이 어디에 있어요? - Where is the coffee shop? 커피숍은 백화점 안에 있어요. 백화점 안으로 들어가서 2층으로 가세요 - The coffee shop is in the department store. Please go into to department store and then to the 2nd floor.
