It’s July, 1914. A dizzying schoolyear has just ended in the best possible way, the nights are warm, and Hans Capon is painting his future in bold, happy strokes.
“To the adventures still ahead of us!” he finishes, stars in his eyes, and raises his glass for Henry to meet. He’s drunk on wine and summer’s promises, spilling some of the liquid in an unbridled flick of the wrist.
A stain blooms on his cuff, red. Like his blood on Henry’s mouth. Like the carnage that waits for them.
