Armand smiled passively, eyes downcast. Even now, he didn't mind the enemies he'd created for Louis. Or the sins he'd committed. The sins he'd allowed.

As he opened his mouth to respond, Armand's voice echoed inside his head, making him freeze and ceased his struggles. It was loud, practically echoing off his skull, and had he been able to, Nicolas would have covered his ears with his hands in an attempt to silence it.

Armand stared at Nicolas for a long moment, his eyes wide as if he could see every part of him at once. Past and present. Maybe he could, if he tried.

But his thoughts were turned inward. Was Nicolas correct? Did he enjoy harming others? No, not enjoy, he was fairly sure of that. It was something else. That must be the case, or else why would he continue to do harm? Santino had taught him that it was his nature to do harm. Although he was never sure that he was what Santino had intended him to be.

Did that matter?

Still, although he did not enjoy harming Nicolas, there was something gratifying in his sudden stillness. If only he could still his mind the same way he could still his body.
