When Armand locked him away, there was usually reason. That reason was usually punishment, or For His Own Good. A broken rule, a mental break. This time, there were neither. Actually, Nicolas was having a streak of good days. The insanity was at bay, as well as his misbehaviors. And still Armand came to him as he went to coffin, dragging him down to the cell deep below in the catacombs that was at times his second home.

There was no conversation. No reasoning. Nicolas was completely cut off from his coven members- not that he'd want to talk to them, anyways. A victim was brought to him by Armand biweekly, yet the coven master did not speak to him. That became routine. Still, Nicolas did not know why.

Until the sound of footsteps approaching his cell. Not Armand. A different vampire. One whose presence he did not recognize. Nicolas stood as the door opened, ready to pounce, to fight his way from this cell. But recognition stopped him. The boy that was Armand's pet stood before him, now a vampire. A recent development, clearly, since he'd been mortal last Nicolas saw him.

He'd never paid much mind to the boy. Armand's business was his own, and Nicolas had learned long ago not to interfere. But he knew well enough that Armand would never turn the boy. Armand would never turn anyone. This was the work of someone else- but why had Armand allowed it?

Nicolas stood behind Lestat as he sat at his piano, watching as his maker alternated between playing music and scribbling notes on his sheet music. The start of a melody, the early stages of lyrics. He was unsure if his presence was noted; it was always a coin toss whether or not Lestat would acknowledge or ignore him. At least they were alone. It was easier to goad Lestat into a response when no one else was around- however it was much more satisfying to break Lestat in front of others.

Nicolas was not one to seek out the company of other vampires. He was indifferent to others of his kind at best, and at his worst times he would flee the second he sensed another in his vicinity. All things considered, he was currently at a high point; feeding a sufficient amount and not being a complete recluse. That was why, when he sensed another, he did not flee. He'd wait it out. It was rare that others approached anyways. They were often just as wary of others as he was.

He went about his night, proceeding with his hunt as he'd initially intended. A drunken stranger, stumbling between bars, incidentally lured into a back alley. Nicolas drank, only pulling back when he felt the unmistakeable chill of being watched. Fangs bared, he turned to see the woman watching him, the presence he had felt earlier.

Since abandoning the theater, Nicolas kept to himself. He tuned out other vampires, wanting no part of the conversations in their heads. He'd had enough of other vampires, thank you very much. Everything was going fine.

And then the book released. Nicolas thought nothing of it, until he heard the name. He'd picked up the book, and just as quickly threw it into the flames once he realized it was true. It would get to Lestat's head, and the consequences would cause turmoil for all of them. Sure enough, Lestat stepped into the public eye, and Nicolas could no longer go on ignoring the presence of other vampires. It was the talk of the world, both mortal and immortal. Still, he could stay away from it, go on existing in his isolation far far away from Lestat and his bullshit.

No. Of course not. That would be too easy. A presence, one night, as he emerged from the apartment he'd been renting. A presence that made his stomach drop. A silhouette across the street, unmistakable eyes aglow under the streetlights. Nicolas had half a mind to turn around and go back inside, but he knew he would be followed.
