So I recently saw this howitzer online. Captured British cannon at Yorktown, big deal, right? That’s what I thought, until I saw the crest just above the touch hole. 

Obviously the gun bears the Royal Cipher at the top of the barrel. Again, no big deal. But the crest lower down wasn’t one that I expected - at first glance it looked exactly like the Clan Campbell/Duke of Argyle’s heraldry. What, I wondered, was the coat of arms of Scotland’s mightiest clan doing on an artillery piece forged and ostensibly owned by the Board of Ordinance?

Well, it turns out the Board was actually governed by Colin Campbell, Duke of Argyle, in his capacity at Master General at various points between 1725 and 1745. It wasn’t unusual for British artillery to bear the personal crest of whoever the serving Master General was at the time. This piece, therefore, was first forged sometime in the second quarter of the 18th century, under Campbell’s directives.

But.

Not everyone has the same taste.  Maybe you made a hat in your favorite cheerful colors, but your friend really prefers neutrals.  Maybe you spent months making a gorgeous lace shawl for your mother, who you never noticed doesn’t wear shawls.  

I thought for years that my husband hated knitwear.  I made him a few things and he would wear them once or twice and put them away quietly because he was afraid of hurting my feelings.  Turns out he just has his own sense of style and didn’t like wearing the things I love.  When I made him pick out the yarn and the pattern (with my input about yarn suitability), then knitted him a scarf, he loved it.  He wears it almost every day.  Yesterday he chose a fingerless glove pattern and dug through my stash and I’m sure he’s going to wear them as much as the scarf.  He’s really excited about them!
