what are your thoughts on the transition to a freeform 6v6 format in overwatch to the stricter 5v5 with class limits in overwatch 2?
i think you're a bit confused -- the class limiting happened first, overwatch was mandatory 2-2-2 for a good while before overwatch 2.
overall at the level of organized play i think that the 2-2-2 change took away a few fun cool things that could happen (i will always remember ameng ballingout with 4 dps) but was mostly good -- it is good for the careers of pros to trust that their role isnt going to be randomly obsoleted, and good for viewership because 3-3 comps were even worse to watch than overwatch esports in general. for ladder play it was straightfowardly extremely necessary, the amount of miserable non-games you could have with 4-5 DPS on your team and one reluctant salty mercy was fucking horrendous and it had to change
as for the 5-5 change, i dislike it a lot. from what little i've played, it just seems like a bandaid to fix queue times slapped over the fact that tank is a miserable role to play in soloq. the need for one tank to stay alive now means that tanks are buffed to high hell, healing creep (already a problem before the change) is through the roof, and the impact of being tank diffed is basically insurmountable in any other role. and in pro play i also think it's a real shame, because the synergy between tank duos was a magical thing to watch. gesture/fury, fate/void, pokpo/daco... the offtank role being deleted from the game i think definitely took away from the strategy of it
