Coyle as a husband headcanons (tw for various mentions of different abuses):
⚡️Like most abusers, image and control of said image is everything to Coyle. So as soon as he's charmed his way into securing that ring on the finger of his wife, those little red flags which were easier to ignore when they were only courting become much more apparent.
⚡️Coyle expects a perfect housewife, a wife who cooks, cleans, and meets his wants regardless of her own needs. However, since he's so conscious of his social image, he always ensures his wife always looks presentable in public and that she always keeps up the facade of selling him as a great husband.
⚡️In that regard, he's careful to keep his abuse to areas which are not easily spotted. Arms, legs, back, chest, ass, and thighs are all targets of his hand, boot, or, if particularly unhappy, his cigarettes. And he always makes sure to point out how each of his 'punishments' are very fair and well earned due to the wife's own failings.
⚡️He is possessive and insanely jealous, often fabricating and imagining encounters which he can use as an excuse to teach her a lesson about disrespecting him. And this extends to him reminding her that all his police buddies know how to deal with liars and whores as a reminder that sharing any private details about their relationship will end badly.
⚡️Coyle is very protective of his private space within the home and his private space is filled with notebooks and considerable evidence of his sheer paranoia and ramblings. He expects his wife to clean this space but god help her if she moves something accidentally.
⚡️Coyle is also financially abusive and controls every cent that moves through their household. Makes jokes about his wife being a ditzy spender when they are around others and expects her to smile and laugh as though a single missing cent won't result in her being beaten bloody by his belt.
⚡️Knows his wife will never dare to leave him and uses that power dynamic to fuck with her head as he will make romantic gestures on occasion by buying her flowers, a new dress etc. All designed to get her to question her perception of their marriage and keep his idealised version of himself strong.
⚡️In terms of sex? Well, Coyle is certainly not a man who believes that marital rape is a thing. That's his wife. He'll fuck her when he likes and how he likes and if she's hesitant to meet his red-blooded needs then she's clearly A) disrespecting him B) fucking someone else and both are easily punishable offenses to be corrected after he's already taken what he wants.
⚡️The only time his wife can possibly get a little peace from him is when she's bathing because he's not super comfortable around water due to his own traumas. However, even that can potentially backfire as any feeling of inadequacy can spark a vicious desire for control which only leads to further abuse.
⚡️ The worst thing about being married to Coyle is how the town treats his wife. She is treated like she's won some amazing prize and how she's super lucky to have locked down such a handsome, hard-working local hero. It's the kind of constant reminder that starts to wear down reality and lead his wife to believe that maybe everyone is right and Coyle's not actually a monster and only treats her that way because she deserves it.
