After a near miss with a kavian nest in the forest outside of Speculo Academy, two fey and their vampire protector go out on a search for a kavian hunter so storied, some think he never existed at all.
Darkling picks up fairly soon after Changeling left off, with the three of them on their road trip. The plot this time around was a lot slower; it may not have been much slower than the first book, but it certainly felt as such. Not a negative aspect, but it was noticed.
I love Connorbar as a character. We have not met a lot of hunters thus far, and of those they have been younger and inexperienced. I enjoyed seeing more experienced characters, showing how ignorant and fresh these main characters really are! It's truly so refreshing to see a teenage/young adult character in fantasy be actually treated as an inexperienced person!
I do really feel like some characterizations were a little off. I find it hard to believe Connor didn't suspect Lizzy was his daughter. The foreshadowing, at least, went a little hard on that aspect.
Booker, oh my boy. Booker and Lizzy and the struggle with understanding what the future holds for them is so HEARTBREAKING. Being a young adult and trying to find your way in the world and realizing things aren't going to be the same forever, or even a little how you imagined the future, is so heartbreaking.
Finally the villain is revealed! I'm so looking forward to seeing more of Sethan. He's so scary, and something tells me we're in for a twist...
THE DEPICTION OF TRAUMA IN THIS BOOK wow I love it. I love Edward. I think he was set up beautifully in the last book, and his introduction here was so good. He's so kicked dog, he's so imperfect victim. His interiority is written so well, it's so believable. I loved having his POV chapters. I wouldn't have expected it--it surprised me a little! But truly it added to the depth of the story without overwhelming it.
The relationships in general really blossomed in this sequel. Even between Connorbar and Olwen, interpersonal relationships rule. I'm sorry to say I still struggle with Lizzy and Andric. Even though their relationship is written as very sweet, I just find it hard to get on board with the fact that someone 22/23 would fall for a 17/18 y/o. It's the part of the series that bothers me the most.
That all said, I look forward to the trilogy finale! The world and lore continues to draw me in, and I need very much to know how this resolves with the European Vampire Council and the kavian threat!
