Something is burning. The acrid smell was faint before, but now she could definitely tell that something was blazing brightly in the night with the help of her sensitive nose. The smell was stronger and had changed, so Sapphire naturally came to the conclusion that an accelerant used. Was someone trying to burn the facility down? It wouldn't get them anywhere.
In a specially picked nook of the woods, inside of a rather personalized alcove, the girl wrapped her arms tightly around the warm bundle of feathers that was her partner. This was her secret base. She was safe there. Nobody would be able to find her, not even the fire.
… So she was asking about that. No wonder, she would have been able to feel the burns, right? He looked up for a moment, as if bargaining with God himself. Why. Why are you doing this, he wondered. He was a good boy, who did nothing wrong. … Well, he didn’t do a lot of things wrong. You know what, let’s just ignore that thought. He let out a sigh, raising a brow as he looked back down at Sapphire.
"… Our roommate… uh…" How could he say this without looking like a loser? Well, there really wasn’t any way to say it like that, and wouldn’t she be able to tell if he was lying? God. He huffed, irritation and embarrassment abound as he crossed his arms over his chest and looked away.
"He lit me on fire."
He could have sworn there was an odd silence for just a moment before she went to explain about her… Pokey man? What? He blinked, partially thankful for the topic-change but also growing more and more confused.
"Woah, woah, woah! Pokémon? N’wait… ya said Hoenn, right? What country’s that in? … They just hand out animals? Hey, I want one…" He wouldn’t lie. Having a fire-breathing chicken would be pretty cool.
Even so, the behemoth nodded before he would comply. He began peeling off his gloves and offering his hands to the younger, all while being mindful of the little chick that ran around them - it could be pretty bad if someone as big as him stepped on a little thing like that.
"Huh, she seems pretty smart for a bird. Are all yer Pokey-guys like this?" Small talk would be initiated as he watched his partner prepare her makeshift treatment, and he would admit, he was thoroughly impressed. ”Yer pretty woodsy, arentcha?”
Of course she’d ask, Joseph. Sapphire would have asked about it even if she hadn't experience the pain second-hand. That's kind of how curiosity works. If it weren't for the emotional tie between the two, she would have sworn that he was telling her a really bad joke. But the reverberating emotions she reluctantly felt told her that there was no punch line to wait for.
The revelation was more than enough to stun the girl back in to silence as she carefully pressed the oozing halves down on her partner's wounds. Had she not been wondering as to why on earth their roommate set Joseph on fire, she would have marveled at the sheer size difference between their hands. Toro, picking up on Sapphire's fledgling distress, quieted down and separated herself from the two humans.
Hang on, he was asking more questions! Time to put a somewhat cheery expression back on. "To beginning trainers, yeah!" The girl was certain that her father would happily provide Joseph with a starter. A slow pang of uncertainty began to work it's way in to the girl's heart. Would she ever get to see her father again?
Just keep talking and don't think about it. "And it's pretty much it's own region, there's water on all sides so you usually have to get there by boat or by travelling on a pokémon that won't get tired out by the journey. It's south-west to Johto." Joseph probably doesn't know where that is either, but hey.
"Pokémon vary in intelligence just like humans do! In fact, some are even smarter." Metagross came to mind as an example. A very impressive pokémon! The girl's smile became a little bit more genuine when Joseph commented on her outdoorsy nature. "Yeah! Dad'd sometimes need help in his research, so I'd help him out! I learned a lot because of it."
{His expression was glared daggers dripping with poison. She’d really decided to take up his time with such an inane question?
Well, whatever. As much as he’d wish he;d had something better to do, he didn’t. Maybe he’d bite just this once.}
— “Shouldn’t I be asking you that? Or maybe you should be asking a vet… That bird looks half roasted.”
{Haha oh god he thinks he’s funny or something. At least now he knew who to hit up if he had a craving for chicken. It was a good thing he could keep himself amused with bad jokes or he’d be pretty bored all the time since this is how he’d tended to treat potential friends!
Nishi fully turned to her, shoving his hands in his pockets and leaning up against a wall with a gentle, confident smirk. He’d decided he’d stick around as long as Sapphire did… Mostly to make fun of her weird bird.}
This guy clearly had no idea what he was talking about. Had he even the vaguest knowledge about pokémon, he'd be able to tell that little Toro was more or less at the peak of her health. "I only stopped 'cause I could tell you were starin'." The same gentle hand that had been shielding the little chick from Nishi's gaze picked her up and lowered her down in to the trainer's waiting arm. Maybe it'd be a little clearer to the youth that the fowl wasn't exactly a local breed if he could see her better.
"Buddy, Toro's the healthiest Torchic yer gonna see in this place," she quipped while delicately preening the three feathers atop her partner's head. Introductions hadn't even been exchanged yet Nishi was already grating on Sapphire's nerves. She knew better than to let her budding irritation show, however. The feeling that he was dangerous was one that just couldn't be shaken. Instead, she decided to try something else.
"Ya'd think that people would actually, y'know, connect the dots between her fiery coloration and actual fire, but yer little joke is actually the closest anyone's ever come to actually making that association." A bit of an experiment on the girl's part. How would a roundabout compliment affect the stranger's mood? It was time to see.
Wow, things sure are tense around here. Time to skedaddle off in to the forest until things calm down a bit.

A sleepless night bruised his heed like an old friend, back to hamper his thought. He was the stone ocean waters lapped at to nothing with time’s passing, moments spent searching for family, friends; comrades alike, it pressured his resolve. He wouldn’t falter for exhaustion’s sake, still so much ground to cover and he had yet to take to a bird’s eye view. A flick of the wrist upon arrival confirmed his abilities remained intact; mounds of sand punching dents into walls and whipping at various targets to further his suspicions. That smallest comfort was foundation for what he hoped may be greater blessings.
Languid gait carried him into yonder recreation hall, granted freedom by its broad scope to look about at his leisure. Though he noted her presence overhead, he didn’t advocate idle chatter— until she drew attention unto herself by her own effort. Initially, there was no acknowledgment on his part, nothing seen in squandering vocables until necessitated.
He yielded in time, once learning the area had nothing to offer.
❝—- You are?❞
Quiet guy, isn't he? Or perhaps he had more important things to do? It could very easily be both, and it was at that thought that the contemplative girl popped another biscuit in her mouth to continue her observations and allow herself a moment to get more comfortable - legs that had been bundled up close to her chest stretching out and coming to hang off of the edge of the shelf.
Of course, it just so happened that his search of the area had concluded before she could finish savoring her baked treat. The redhead's question confused her a bit. Was he asking if she was new? Requesting that she introduce herself? At least it was easy to pass thinking it over as simply being polite -- in contradiction to her earlier actions, amusingly enough -- and not talking with her mouth full.
It'd probably be best to answer both, just in case. "M' name's Sapphire," she began with after finally swallowing the food that was in her mouth. "I've been 'round this prison for... I think it'll have been a week tomorrow, actually." Time was passing quickly, and if the little brunette had to admit it, it kind of scared her.
People around here didn't really know much about pokémon -- something that baffled Sapphire, seeing as they were very much a part of every day life back home -- so it was only natural that gazes were drawn towards the alien avian. Curiosity was prominent among many, awe in others, but it was when she was traversing the hallways did she feel something else behind another's eyes.
Hostility? Or was it more of a hunter's instinct? It was hard for the girl to place, but this did not stop her from coming to a halt -- causing the resting Toro on her shoulder to lurch forward forward gently -- to address the one this ominous feeling gaze originated from. A boy around her age, of slight build. She knew better than to underestimate one's strength because of their size, of course. Both she herself and the creatures she familiarized herself with were a testament to that.
A somewhat protective hand was brought up to help provide balance to Toro while Sapphire looked Nishi over carefully. "S' there somethin' I can help you with?" A little bit of of investigation to determine whether the boy should be treated with caution.
A gym. It was something Sapphire didn't have access to during her travels -- not ones like this at least, but she more than compensated for that by carrying out her own specialized regimens using the diverse landscape. Unfortunately there wasn't all that much that could be used aside from the trees in the forest, and even then she had a feeling that it wouldn't be received well if Toro ended up knocking down a tree or two... or accidentally started a forest fire.
So that explains why she was occupying it, watching her small friend from behind the punching bag and steadying it as the pokémon delivered solid blows despite the target being well over twice her size. Looks like she was progressing well!
The entry of another drew her attention away. Did she come to train as well? If so, Sapphire couldn't help but feel a pique of curiosity. It was a rare chance that she got to see another's exercise in action; heck, maybe she'd even give it a try herself if it looked interesting enough.
It was rude to stare, this she knew. Most of her time may have been spent out in the wilds, but even she had some manners. Even so... It was hard to draw her eyes away from the young man who entered the recreation room.
From the looks of him, he looked like the kind of guy who would train Ground types or hang out around Route 111; the earthen gourd on his back certainly aided that impression.
Unsure if he saw her up on her perch - one of the many shelves that were lined with video games, where she was munching away on goodies she had lifted from the kitchen - she decided it wisest to make herself known. Something told her that it wouldn't be a good idea to surprise this guy.
"You new around here?" she inquired, guessing that the redhead was trying to get an idea of the facility's layout much like she did upon her arrival.
little red and the not so big bad wolf [closed // Toboe]
The courtyard proved to be more aesthetically pleasing than the forest, even if it didn't really matter all that much to Sapphire. There was a time where she would have preferred the serene and landscape over the rough woodlands, picking flowers and wearing them in her hair, but that was long ago.
Even so, it was an awfully nice place to relax in. She couldn't have been the only one to think so either, seeing how there were one or two other -- what should she call them? Abductees? Yeah, abductees fit -- lingering around the area as well.
It was a rare occasion in which Sapphire and Toro were seperate from one other; the trainer laying on her back and watching the sky while keeping her feet in the cool water of a stream while her Pokémon investigated the colorful flora that dotted the landscape. Maybe some had berries that she could eat!
Upon happening across a rather large flower the Torchic leaned in closer, her little beak becoming enveloped by soft petals --
and sneezed.
It drew Sapphire's attention immediately and the girl sprang in to action, full on sprinting until her eyes caught sight of what she feared might have happened. The flower was on fire. Flames spread slowly, burning away the delicate plant.
Instead of risking letting it burn further until she fully closed the distance, Sapphire called out to her partner. "Toro! Cut that flower down with Scratch then go ahead and kick up some dirt and smother it with another one!"
Much like the human girl had done earlier, Toro's actions were carried out without delay; one precise swipe of the claws followed up another, rougher one that tore up chunks of the pristine looking earth to strew them across the already dwindling blaze.
It wasn't long afterwards that the brunette arrived on scene, scooping up the little fire-type and stamping on the pitiful mass that was once a lovely blossom."It's been a long time since we had somethin' like that happen, huh Toro?" she mused as she leaned down to pick up her friend, only to straighten up and lay her eyes on a boy who she can only guess witnessed the entire event. "Oh, uh... I hope you weren't plannin' on takin' a whiff of that flower anytime soon." Oh man, this was embarrassing.

Aaaalrightie! If you wanna get a (shortish probably) starter from me and have your muse interact with Sapphire, you go on ahead and like this post!
I'm gonna have to cap it at 3 though!
I'm really glad that I joined CC bc wow!! Characters from series I was really into when I was younger!!! It's such a pleasant nostalgia trip.
“… Oh?”
“Do you know of a way to do so?”
“Currently I’m on board with your idea.”
Well hey, how about that! Looks like the lady(?) in white has a good head on her(?) shoulders.
"I can't exactly speak to critters, but there may be a way to show we don't mean no harm if we observe it an' come to understand it's body language."
"Jeez, what's with y'all?! Too quick to jump to the worst possible solution. If yer really worried about it messin' with people, why not tame it?"
Jeeze, wasn’t this one a ray of sunshine! Prior anxieties aside, the amount of positivity she gave off was enough to impact the behemoth’s own mood, allowing him to become more relaxed in this odd encounter. He drew in a deep breath, nodding slowly at her question.
"Yeah. Most people just call me JoJo fer short. I mean, ya can if ya want, but. Y’know." In fact… did he know a single person who didn’t call him that? … Weird, but… that was besides the point. The point now was that he would be stuck with this girl for as long as he was here. There didn’t seem to be any threats, but if she couldn’t hold her own, then he would have to make a note to protect her, for both of their sake.
"C’mon, now, don’t be apologizin’. I mean, I already gave ya a lil’ hell, earlier…" He remembered the burns inflicted on him by that douchebag, Jeeves. A huff, accompanied with a small seed of anger at the thought of it. He would distract himself, however, leaning in closer just to get a look at that strange little bird. Curiosity abound, his lips parted in awe as he watched the little thing breath fire.
"Woah! Amazing! She’s a lil’ firebird!" He exclaimed, reaching forward to gently touch her chest— woah, she’s warm! “I ain’t ever seen nothin’ like this… what is she? Ya said her name’s Toro, right? N’fer the record, I’m pretty damn glad she likes me. We’d be dealin’ with more burns if she didn’t, right?”
Feeling a bit more relaxed now that her initial excitement eased, Sapphire herself couldn't help but feel equally curious. "Oh yeah, how'd that happen anyway?" Did he try to cook something and fail horribly? There were an awful lot of possibilities.
The burning sensation that the girl had felt when canvasing the area had certainly been alarming; she had almost been certain that it was a side effect of the brands on their wrists and not because of Joseph's actions. It must've been rather unpleasant when she had taken her gloves off to investigate and later gone digging through the plant life in the nearby forest for plants to make in to a salve. At least she had help for that part.
"Yea, that's her name! And she's a Torchic, a Pokémon native to m' home region of Hoenn. It's one of the species that's handed out by professors, like my dad, to new trainers when they start their journey." An obligatory explanation, of course. Right now Sapphire was concerned about something else. "Toro'd never hurt a person unless they did somethin' real bad, so you're safe."
An affirming chirp from the fire-type sounded as the brunette set her partner down - after which Toro promptly began to circle Joseph and Sapphire held out her hands expectantly. "Lemme see your hands, I got somethin' for you."
The forest search had been difficult but provided reward; aloe vera, as well as a few other herbs that Sapphire would surely use later. Plump leaves were pulled from the pouch that rested at her waist and promptly cut in half by sharp nails one really wouldn't expect to see on a teenage girl.
It wasn't exactly a Rawst berry, but at it'd do something.

Sapphire Birch. That was a chick’s name. Please, God, be kind.
Joseph, himself, was a bit anxious to get this supposedly fated meeting underway. He couldn’t help but wonder what this girl would be all about. Was she hot? Smart? Stupid as hell? Well, her brains didn’t really matter. As long as she was cute… Hah. They’d fall in love like a fucked up fairy tail and live… sort of happily ever after. That was his plan, anyways, until he would bump into the girl just in front of their door.
He… was a little disappointed. She seemed more of a sporty type than a bombshell. Not his type at all! Even still, he blinked, taking in the sight of the girl who would supposedly change his life, her lack of height meaning nothing much to him at all. Everyone was shorter than he was, after all.
She didn’t… seem too bad… shit. Should he say something? The bird that would apparently start yelling at them would kickstart him into a forced introduction.
"Uh, yer Saph, right? … Er. Can I call ya that? Saph?" A pause, glancing down to the tiny bird that she held. "You’ve been givin’ me th’goddamn dizzies with all yer… feelings n’shit." Yeah, Sapphire. How dare you have feelings. "Nice chicken. … Wait. What the fuck is that thing?" That was certainly a confusing sight. What the hell was that thing?
Sapphire couldn't help but feel a little bit grateful that Toro helped to kick things off. Just what was she supposed to say to introduce herself had the little bird not spoken up? 'Hey, what's up, you're stuck with me through this nightmare?' No way.
He seemed nice enough at least, at which the girl quickly brightened up with a smile despite her own anxiety about the whole affair. "Yeah, that'd be me! I don't really mind if ya call me Saph, is there anythin' I should be callin' you besides Joseph?"
As apologetic she may have been for the intrusive emotions that she had imposed upon her partner, the feeling was quickly escorted out by a sense of pride and joy. It was too bad that he didn't have the slightest idea about Pokémon, but at least she could teach him about them!
"Sorry about that, it wouldn't be happening if I had any choice about it," she laughed while holding the little Torchic higher for Joseph to see. "Anyway, this here's Toro! She's my partner and we've been through a whole buncha stuff together."
As if to prove to him that she's not just some pet, Toro fluffed out her vibrant plumage and chittered excitedly at him, huffing out a small flame - small enough that it was no hazard to either human, of course- as a final show of zeal and strength. "I think she likes you!"
Could Toro already be getting stronger already? That was one possible explanation as to why the gentle warmth that Sapphire usually felt from holding her Pokémon was steadily becoming more intense.
