So tell me, how is something a whole bunch of meta writers picked up on, with posts on Cas as the wild card, the one thing out of Chuck’s reach, the most unpredictable factor in the mix, and what would ultimately be the undoing his plans, which were conclusions drawn based on over a decade of Cas canon storytelling, that then got expressly confirmed by the text just in case we doubted we were wrong, it was spelled out in dialogue, and then it was shown in plot points, a “headcanon”?
(And uh…drawing a conclusion based on what the story is showing you is just…how storytelling works).
Cas’s love for Dean saved the day. That’s…the actual plot. Without Cas…well.
Think of all those AU worlds, where Sam or Dean destroyed the other.
Why not this Sam, why not this Dean. In those other AU worlds, there wasn’t a Cas, or there wasn’t this Cas. There was obedient angelic soldier Cas. There was fascist torturer incapable of love Cas. There was a Cas but he never met Sam and Dean. Or maybe there had been a Cas but he died already and was lost for good.
Cas’s very presence in this Sam’s and this Dean’s lives have saved them over and over and S15 confirmed it wasn’t just in the moment to moment saves, it was also that he was the only angel who wouldn’t obey, who kept breaking rules, who screwed up Chuck’s plans over and over, he really messed up Sam and Dean fracturing so hard one could go dark and kill the other.
We can trace this all the way back to S4.
Chuck (via Ruby, who was carrying out Lilith’s plans) wanted Sam going full dark demon blood Sam.
What stopped him, reminded him of who he is and pulled him back from the edge? Dean.
“You guys aren’t supposed to be there. You’re not in this story.”
This isn’t headcanon. This isn’t overheated Cas stans assigning a falsely elevated level of importance. This is outright what his role in the story has been for a long time.
Sam, Dean, and Cas all needed each other. Cas needed them, but they also needed Cas. Not just about Destiel, no, but Destiel did save the world. Cas falling for Dean, and Dean loving him right back, Dean’s love saves Cas as much as Cas’s love saves Dean, and then Cas saves Dean, body and spirit, as his final appearance on the show. Plot wise, Cas’s confession is the thing that helps awaken Dean to his own worth, shows him who he really is, not what he is afraid he is, and that lets Dean break the cycle with Chuck.
Sure it’s not just Cas saving the day. It was Sam, Dean, Cas, and Jack. They worked together. Sam, Dean, and Jack are their own kinds of wild cards, but they aren’t exactly like Cas. Cas’s uniqueness is that he is the elusive one who Chuck can’t jerk around as easily as he can the others. They all defy Chuck or are pulled back from playing into Chuck’s game, in various ways, but Cas is the most radical unpredictable element.
Very specifically, Cas is a major, major lynchpin, the essential wild card.
That’s not a headcanon. That’s what the story showed.
