Back to the Stage,  En Español !

I graduated college as a fortunate kind. I made the right move, I met the right people, I knocked on the right doors, and I landed the right roles. I’ve been able to step into the world of film, television and modeling and I can confidently say that I’m working as an actress.

These steps I speak of, they’re baby steps of course. Well, more like toddler steps. You know, the steps you work so hard for, that make you so happy to look back at your parents and boast, because you’ve moved three feet all on your own. I’m proud of my toddler steps, because in a mere 2 years, they’ve felt more like strides to me. The short indies, the cheesy-ass tv commercials, the glamours photoshoots for fertilizing companies, I made it to the “starting somewhere” stages.

Now; however, I feel like I need to retrace my steps. I need to revisit the place that started everything for me. I need theatre in my life. Real, live, black box theatre, with my real, live, hard core thespians. Today I joined Teatro Prometeo, and I’ll be taking to the stage in Spanish. Why not take bigger steps to get through bigger doors? I speak Spanish with my novio, people at work, and well, everyone in Miami, but I’d say my fluency rate is 70% - I want to be able to listen, communicate and perform in Spanish at 100% and I want to continue my craft all the while.  

Vamos a empezar, amigos!

I, for one, still enjoy the festivity of writing an insane list of unrealistic goals and challenges for 2016. Here’s what I’m committing to so far.

1. Meet with PBS and produce one more season of Downton Abbey.

2. Learn to play the harmonica. The bad-ass harmonica though, that was in Mary Poppins and has the drums and symbols attached to it.

3. Star in a Telanovela- slap a putita, or be the putita that gets slapped.

4. Run a half marathon.

5. Compete in a pie eating contest.

6. Master the art of Kung Fu- Chicken and Thai Kwan Donuts.

7. Learn how to fly a kite, learn how to surf, then try kite surfing.

8. Get front row tickets to the Super Bowl to see Beyonce.

9. Be Beyonce.

10. Learn all the names of my cousin’s babies.

11. Roadtrip to Canada and apply for citizenship.

12.  Be “Social Media Free” on Sundays.

13. Learn how to listen to podcasts.

14. Go vegan. Except I get 1 cheat day, 1 hungover day, 1 time of the month day, and 1 time of the day day.

15. Expand my music knowledge beyond the 90′s.    

16. Learn to sing, then be the star in an Opera.

It’s All About Who You Know

It started with my neighbor named Cindy Jo,

whose lawn I used to mow,

who later taught me how to make flowers grow.

 I learned to plant Marigolds on my front patio,

three weeks later I had new Cosmos to show.

Jo was very impressed, she wore a great glow,

she told me I must meet her friend Lo.

Lo needed help because her business was slow.

 I had a new job, 6am I had to wake up and go.

I smiled, I worked with passion, enjoying life’s ebb and flow.

 Now 55 years old, with a shop of my own, still learning what there is to know.

Waiting patiently for Spring as I sit and watch it snow.

Thinking of the flowers that changed my life, the people that I owe.
