So I've just come out of a relationship and these are some of the things learnt along the way:
- Only enter a relationship if you yourself are ready, if its right for you and if you truly want to experience the other person's company. I think this was part of my issue because I probably wasn't ready for this relationship in the first place. I think part of my problem was that I thought being in a relationship was essential for a high school experience so I kind of forced myself into it, which in hindsight was probably a bad idea.
- As cliche as it sounds, relationships are about give and take. If you want to receive affection and love, you have to be ready to show it too. Stand up for yourself but also recognise when you are being to stand off-ish
- Communication is so important. If you don't communicate, how do you know how the other is feeling?
- Set goals and boundaries. Personally, I didn't do this but thinking back I should've. Know what you want in the relationship, or at least have some idea. Literally do not get into a relationship 'for the lols'
- Form your own identity and realise who you really are before you start dating. Because if you don't even know your own feelings, how can you expect to show others your true self
- Don't date in secret. This happened with me and I always felt guilty when I went out and I don't think thats a good mindset to have.
- You'll know if a relationship is right for you or not. Just follow your instincts and think things through
- Don't be too proud to apologise. If you're at fault, its not up to them to apologise, its up to you.
- Relationship are something you want to do, not something you should force yourself, or have to do. If you find yourself having to censor yourself, change how you act or who you are, if it starts to dominate your life negatively then maybe you should re-evaluate.
These are kind of my own personal experiences though so don't take this advice too closely. Basically, a relationship should come naturally and when you're ready not due to societal and environmental pressures.
