A few times, you would catch glimpses of Lobo, but the wolf would disappear as if he were just an apparition, or a figment of your imagination.
You kept the meetings with the wolf a secret from your mother and your grandmother. Not wanting to spook them more than they already have been with previous events.
One day, you were told to help out with a last minute delivery.
"I know you saved up enough money to buy that cottage near the forest." Your mother said as she helped you pack. "Since this is your last job, I'll let you keep half of the coin. It'll be enough to keep food on the table for a few days."
Once giving you the large basket, she used the back of her hand to place on your cheek.
"Your cheeks are red. Are you feeling well?" She asked worriedly.
"I'm fine." You say. "I was moving around a lot this afternoon, and I still haven't cooled down well. But I'll be fine after a bath." You reassure.
The next day, you left around late afternoon. The trip wouldn't take too long as it was just through the woods.
Most of the items you were told to deliver sharp tools, dried foods, and basic ingredients. Just by glancing, you could tell this was for a hunter.
When arriving to the destination, there was no one around the hunting cabin in the woods.
"Are you serious?" You sighed.
It was policy to wait until you made sure someone got the delivery, but you didn't want to miss dinner over a customer.
"I'll give them thirty minutes." You decided, placing the basket down on the ground.
Sitting on a patch of grass, you removed the hood as it was getting warm. While making a flower bracelet, you noticed that you felt a little dizzy.
Maybe I am getting sick..
Time passed quicker than you thought it would, the sun almost done setting when you noticed that the customer was still no where to be found.
"Yeah, I'm going home." You sighed and stood up, stretching a bit before reaching down to pick up the basket. "I hope there's potatoes in today's meal."
As you were making your way back home, you noticed that you left the hood back at the hunter's cabin.
"Ugh!" You groan and look back.
With a quick run you could make it, but something in your gut said to walk, not run.
"I don't want to be late for dinner." You mumbled to yourself and took off running back towards the hunting cabin.
Once you arrived to the cabin, you spotted your red hood exactly where you left it.
"There it is!" You sighed, scooping up the bundle of vibrant red fabric. "Now to go home."
Not thinking twice, stuffing the red hood into the basket, you ran back the way you came. The basket and it's contents making a bit of noise as you did so.
It had gotten dark quickly, the stars making themselves known, but no moon in sight to help light the way well enough.
Just as you were halfway through a grassy clearing-
Before you knew it, you were lying on your back and looking up at the stars.
Then a burning pain flared up on the side of your torso.
"A-ah!" You gasped in shock, tears welling up. "Ha-!"
Shuffling came from the bushes, then a voice cursed. The figure made their way over, light from a lantern coming into view, and then they gasped.
Once the shock wore off, the figure snuffed out the light quickly before grabbing the basket and taking what they wanted, running off soon after. Leaving behind only your red hood and a broken basket.
As your tears fell and dried, with no need of a light, you saw him approach.
So he was telling the truth...
"Life's flashing before your eyes?" Lobo asked as he inched closer.
The smell of dirt became a bit stronger as the seconds passed, but time seemed to slow, and the stars shined brighter.
Then you smiled, turning your head to face the wolf.
"I'm appreciating my last moments."
Kneeling down next to where you lay, Death looked at the wound, the puddle of blood under your torso growing larger.
"It's usually the former." He says, eyes now focused on yours.
"Maybe later." You mumbled.
"You don't have long." The wolf says, watching the color of fading from your skin.
"Then I suppose it'll be very soon."
It was quiet for a second before something was offered. Something that surprised you both.
"May I have the honor of your last dance?"
You felt one last tear slip down your cheek. "You may."
Lobo held the girl close, gently swaying and spinning.
He placed the hood on her to conserve what little warmth she had remaining. The red of her blood blending in with the red of the hooded cloak.
Death watches as the spark of life flickers in her eyes. Her hand almost limp in his paw, fingers cold to the touch.
"Our dance will end soon." He warns with a twirl.
"I-I have..a request." She blinks, slower than before. "Take my body home...I need to go home. Please..?" She whispers the last bit.
"Is that your final request?" Death asks.
"For tonight..?" Little Red closes her eyes. "...yes."
One last spin, then the grand finale.
With a slow and gentle dip, her hand slips out of his paw and hits the red stained grass.
Life having left, leaving Death to embrace.
He carried out her final request. Knocking on the door of the house before stepping into the shadows, watching as her mother and grandmother wept in agony. Her mother holding the cold body close as the older woman wailed into the night.
Death lingered for a moment before making his exit.
But he'll would always remember that soul.
It was always going to end this way. One way or another. 🥀
Hope you enjoyed this fic! Wow did I have fun with this experiment. Anyways, let me know if I should write some more for Death the Wolf!
