If you’re running a blog and you’re new to tumblr I’d like to give you a tip that’s really helped me out. We’re going to talk about likes.

Why like things? Liking a post doesn’t work quite like it does on facebook or twitter. You’re not more likely to see more of a post like that. You MIGHT get suggestions on blogs that are good matches for your tastes but that’s not what it’s best use is.

Anything you like is liked FOREVER. So anything I have ever blogged I liked first. I do this because it lets me see exactly which pics I’ve blogged before. I then get to make a conscious choice. Is this post so hot I REALLY want to repost it? Or am I going to pass it by looking for new content? By and large? I choose new content a whole lot. And that variety has really been a positive thing for my blog’s growth. In this way, I consider what kinds of things i’m posting because i get reminders from my likes. And I also consider things i’m not posting and whether I need more blogs with pain play, bondage, etc.

So liking posts is helpful so you’re not reblogging the old tired content. But there’s something else to be aware of. When it comes to generating notes. The very best way to drive traffic is to post stuff directly to tumblr that is exciting to a large number of followers. Some blogs have figured out… “gee, if i download this porn that doesn’t belong to me, and repost it… I’ll get tons of traffic!”

“So fucking what?” I hear you say? Well if I like ginormous cock #863 what that really means is I liked the post that someone originally posted and no matter who reblogs it, if it finds it’s way into my feed again because someone I follow also loved it’s meaty goodness it remembers the like. But if “Iripoffgayporn” downloads the pic and reposts it and it starts circulating from that person… tumblr has NO idea they’re the same picture. It just knows the chain of likes and reblogs that has to do with this individual post.

So I’d encourage any new guys looking to grow their blog to keep their posts diverse but also recognize if you see a pic you recognize and it’s not liked… like it, so you can keep track of that thread too. I follow a few blogs where I can see based on likes, they’re unintentionally reblogging the same thing over and over and it inspired me to write this up.
