The semi-comprehensive highlighter review that no one asked me for
I don't know if anyone else cares about the 2025 Japanese Stationery Store Awards but I was intrigued by a few things and bought some new supplies. For this post I'm delving into the Pilot Kire-na highlighters which won a grand award.
For years, my favorite highlighter has been the Muji transparent window dual tipped highlighter and the design is somewhat similar to the Pilot Kire-na so I did a side-by-side comparison.
The Tl;Dr is they're fairly similar and when prices are wildly different between them or if one is more accessible for you to buy, I recommend that one. All the differences are minor enough that I believe you'll have a wonderful experience with either highlighter. All other things equal, my overall pick is the new Pilot Kire-na and as I use up my Muji highlighters, I am going to be replacing them with Pilot highlighters in the future.
My test:
I grabbed a bunch of black pens from my stockpiles (different weights, brands, and ink types) to compare the color, durability and general vibe of both highlighters. I did four swatches for each pen: the Muji highlighter immediately after writing, the Muji highlighter five minutes after the ink dried, the Pilot highlighter immediately after writing and the Pilot highlighter five minutes after the ink dried.
Generally speaking, the pilot highlighter to be a bit more smudge proof and the ink pools a lot less. When writing over fully dry ink, there are minimal differences between the two markers but I prefer the Kire-na's blue color when directly compared to the Muji highlighters.

Did my journaling for the day at a cafe. I genuinely think hunger has been a huge motivating factor in my language progress this summer. My desire to explore the food scene of this country far eclipses any social anxiety about not knowing the perfect sentences in Mandarin to order them.

Did another language adventure between classes today. I went to the record store and challenged myself to walk out with something I didn't already own. I found a Taiwanese variant of an American record with a store-specific obi sleeve. 10/10 vibes
After watching a random celebrity “What’s in my bag?” video, I got curious (or maybe just nosy, lol) and started asking everyone the same question. So, what’s in your bag? Or, if you’re not the type to carry one, what’s in your pockets?
Love this question! I'll give you both:
The pockets - loose change and a stray receipt
The bag - the usual suspects (phone, keys, wallet); my language textbook for class, a half empty bottle of water, a portable charger; my planner; and my pen case (honorable mentions inside the pen case are a few .5 Muji gel pens, the new pilot highlighters, my favorite metal mechanical pencil and some lead refills and correction tape)

Back to school shopping was always my favorite time of year in high school. Even though at this point, I kind of naturally replenish things as I run out and buy according to my own tastes rather than a school list, I can't help myself from doing a little trip before classes start.
This year I'm sticking with my Muji binder setup and will swap in different dividers and paper types depending on the classes I pick for the fall. The biggest additions were the new (well, new-ish) Pilot kire-na highlighters with the guides and some letter writing paper. I promised my friends that I'd physically write to soften the blow of the 12 hour time difference.
Other new additions are some small bits and bobs from Tools to Live By in Taipei. They had some store exclusive stationary that I thought was functional and would make for a great souvenir.
Overall, I'm pretty hyped for my semester to start 🖤🖤🖤

I just finished a midterm oral presentation for my summer language class. I did 800 characters on my undergrad experience and then memorized a summary to present. Definitely I've come a long way from my middle school days watching "Big Bird Goes to China" (kind of a banger)
Enjoy a photo of my personal stationary brand trifecta (Muji, Kokuyo Campus, Traveler's Company). May they never go out of business. I've been using these A6 notebooks to collect stamps around Taiwan this summer. I'm not doing a full blown stamp hunt, but I always collect when I organically go to a new train station or museum with a stamping station. My stamp notebook has quickly become one of the coolest souvenirs I've gotten.

As much as I loved working full time, I'm really enjoying this summer vacation before grad school starts. The summer classes, the adventures, the free time to write and explore and ponder -- this summer is shaping up to be the perfect break I didn't know I needed.

This weekend I took my first day trip of the summer. I'm trying to take advantage of all the language immersion opportunities I can (i.e. getting the heck off campus so I can talk to people who will force me to use my Mandarin). I'm typically a planner, but this weekend I hopped on a bus with a location in mind and no itinerary past that. Reader, it was amazing. I got to see the most beautiful views, ate delicious food, and did some shopping!
I found myself sitting in a cable car watching a waterfall make a rainbow as I traveled up a mountain. The whole experience felt so surreal and honestly just made me so grateful I stuck with learning Mandarin even when it felt impossible. Cannot wait for the next adventure 🥹🖤

I've been trying to find balance between studying indoors and outdoors. This summer I'm working on writing practice because I spent a lot of undergrad typing essays and my recall for writing characters from memory has been greatly reduced. Pleco is never too far from my hand but I'm actually pretty proud of how things have been going so far 🖤🖤

6.27.25 | I finally have an excuse to rationalize my stationary runs. Back to school shopping has always been one of my favorite times of year. This time, as a graduate school student, I get to shop, not according to assigned lists or based on my undergrad budget, but based on what I think will optimize my study habits and bring me joy.
I'll be spending this summer like a literal kid in a candy shop 😭😭
It's been a week since I moved to Taipei (!!) for language school and it still feels like a dream. I've been studying Mandarin for half my life at this point and it's exciting to have so many chances to use what I've learned on a daily basis.
I've walked past this cafe the last three days on my way home and today I finally built up the confidence to go inside and order something 🥹

Getting back into the swing of things and slowing working my way through the vocab list my grad school program sent me to be ready for classes in the fall. I'm trying my best to get my brain back in student mode after taking a few years off to get work experience. So far so good. I still can't keep a 100 days of productivity streak going to save my life, but that's never stopped me from getting everything done by my deadlines so I'll take it 😂
