Hiccup saved Wodensfang in the midst of the first human-dragon war, despite the Wodensfang being sent to kill him.

Hiccup was the first human to befriend a dragon and learn to speak Dragonese.

The humans were losing the war, so Wodensfang brought Hiccup the Dragonsword that contained the Dragon Jewel, which if broken, would cause all dragons to go extinct.

Hiccup used the Dragon Jewel to banish Merciless/the Green Death, ending the war and saving his people.

Hiccup spent the rest of his life leading his kingdom with the Dragonmark as its symbol, to honour his friendship with Wodensfang. The first Dragonmark, placed on his forehead, was made from his blood and the blood of Wodensfang.
