friendship had always been such a foreign concept to loki. he had wanted it, at first, & showed it by the way he clung to his brothers group of friends as if they wanted anything to do with him -- as if he had been anything more in their eyes than thor's weak younger brother. when he scared them by shapeshifting into great beasts ( which had been a joke ) or when he'd cast his illusions & they leveled him with confusion & derision, he told himself friendships were worthless. intangible. unnecessary. he was a god, & even better, a prince.
the library filled with books of spells & magic had become his friends. they were much more reliable than anyone in the palace, or asgard as a whole, could ever be. they didn't flinch at the sparks of emerald that would flutter & glow alight at his fingertips. they didn't watch him train with his brother & laugh behind their hands when his feet were swept out from under him. they were knowledgeable. they were interesting. some would even say that they were consistent.
somewhere along through time, through loving & losing ( & losing, & losing, & losing, & losing ... ) he had found genuine friendship. it was so much more real, so much more solid than loki had ever anticipated it to be. that's what the fluttering in his chest was, this ever present rush of something that flooded his nervous system whenever mobius dared to get too close. it was friendship that caught in his throat when mobius smiled at him, evident fondness dancing in his eyes & his lips lifting in that crooked little way. it was friendship that made loki long for mobius' presence when they were apart. it was friendship that buzzed along his skin even now, that flared up whenever mobius finally spoke after swallowing his forkful of pie.
he bites mindlessly at his lower lip. a part of him hopes he can chew away at the endearment clawing up his throat & blooming into his cheeks.
"consistent," he parrots & cuts off a small piece of the pie with his fork. he doesn't raise it to his lips. "you're truly in the wrong line of work if you find joy in consistency. perhaps that's why it appeals to you so much, now. i've always preferred a bit of inconsistency, actually. the unexplainable. the chaotic. but you knew that already, i'm sure." he finally brings the bite to his mouth. he thinks it probably tastes better because mobius is here. he doesn't think he'd like it if he were eating it alone.
"i'm saying that, from my perspective, your diet is atrocious. just like your taste in, what was it? beautiful unions of form & function?" laughter bubbles in his chest, & when it sprinkles onto his tongue it's resoundingly light. there's something in the room ( or is it him? ) that's a little too warm. he never really appreciated the warmth before, but for some reason it wasn't quite so bad, now.
a foot reaches out through the short distance and pokes at mobius' pantleg. "if keylime isn't your favorite, why eat about half an entire pie of it a day? does the tva not have it in their budget for your beloved french silk?" he snorts, a quick, humored sound.
"i would try it. since i am such an open, cooperative individual."
