Today was Run or Dye registration, so this morning Emily and I headed on over to Alannah's for breakfast and to finish up our Runner 5 costumes. We did the backs yesterday, let them dry over night, and now we're done the fronts. We went to grab our registration bags and the line was HUGE, wrapping all the way down the entrance of the mall and around well into the perpendicular hall, but it moved pretty fast. We went back to Alannah's to take off the stencils and see how things looked and now we're just waiting for them to dry completely.
I'm really pleased that you can tell the zombie hands are hands. We were worried that the detail would smudge together and look weird, what with our homemade stencils, but they worked out!

liquidsnakesmissingshirt reblogged your photoset and added:
Those look great. Best of luck in the run! :)
Thank you! And thank you! I'm pretty excited, it should be a lot of fun.

collected-sports-bra replied to your post: This Saturday, my cousin/roommate, Emi...
Love these shirts, can i have one? ;)
Thanks! They'll be sweaty and dyed randomly after the run, which will either raise or dramatically decrease their desirability.
In all seriousness, they were super easy to make if anyone does want their own (or variations thereupon). We just bought some cheap white shirts (specifically stylishly loose ones, since we'll be running in them tomorrow and don't trust the fabric to breathe), black fabric spray paint (Tulip brand), printed off some logos (I put them in a Word document to adjust size and colour first), and then used scissors and a utility knife to cut out the logos to make stencils for the shirts. The last part took the longest, mostly because our knife was on its last blade and dull, but today we got new ones to finish up with and that sped up the rest of the process. The result using paper stencils is a touch messy, but that's kind of the aesthetic of the logo anyway. Plus, if these are Runner 5 costumes, then it only makes sense that they would be rough shirts made from whatever Five could find in Abel.
We'll have to think of some kind of headcanon for why we end up covered in dye. New tests on zombie behaviour maybe? Perhaps different colours attract zoms and so, while running, we are periodically sprayed with dye to see which is most effective. For science.

This Saturday, my cousin/roommate, Emily, and my friend/previous roommate, Alannah, and I are all doing this thing called Run or Dye. It's a relaxed 5K run where each kilometre is marked by the runners being sprayed by colourful dye. Lots of people dress up and make costumes for it or wear all white so the dye shows up, and we decided to do both. Emily, Alannah, and I are all big Zombies, Run! fans, so tonight we grabbed some white shirts, fabric paint, and are making stencils of the Zombies, Run! logo for our own Runner 5 costumes for Saturday. It's going to be the most colourful zombie apocalypse ever.
These are the pictures of our progress thus far. You can catch a glimpse of the awesome braided headbands Emily made for us too. We're finishing up the costumes Friday.

I saw an overgrown tractor trailer by my new route. I wonder if Abel could use it.
If I am remembering correctly, this is the Poudre River Trail in Colorado.

The 10 Mistakes You Make When Running
You don’t switch your route: Same time, same route can make for a boring workout — and stats that don’t ever improve. Switching up your route will challenge different muscles, keep you motivated, and improve your running skills. Don’t stick to your tried-and-true trail; find a new running route with these tips.
You don’t fuel right: You may be able to power through a short run without any food, but if you’re going long, you need fuel and water. Time your run so it’s two to three hours after a meal, or have a snack full of carbs and protein (like one of these pre-workout snacks) about 30 minutes to an hour before you go for a run. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water well before you step out; drinking too much right before you go can cause cramps.
You don’t warm up: Starting your run at full force is not a good idea. You’ll feel sluggish, tight, and discouraged if you don’t warm up before that sprint. Do a light jog or five minutes of brisk walking before starting your actual run.
You don’t cool down: You came, you conquered, you’re done with your run. Don’t stop now, however; you still need to take a few minutes to stretch your warmed muscles to help you recover. These postrun stretches will help increase your flexibility and reduce muscle soreness.
You don’t check your form: Running may seem natural, but a few body adjustments can make a big difference, allowing you to run faster, longer, and more efficiently. Make a mental note to pay attention to your running form every once in a while; your shoulders should be relaxed and down, your arms should swing parallel to the ground (without crossing your midsection), and your head should be up and looking forward, not down. Get more tips on proper running form here.
You don’t challenge yourself: If you want to be a better runner, you need to up your pace. Intervals and tempo runs help you increase your speed in the short term, so that in the long run, you become a faster, better runner.
You run in the wrong gear: Sweat-soaked cotton shirts, shoes without enough support, and pants with chafing seams — all of these can cut a run short or at least make you not want to go out again. Invest in a few key pieces once you’ve upped your mileage; you’ll be surprised by how much what you wear matters. Don’t worry, we’ve got you — check out our list of what not to wear when running here.
You push yourself too hard: Challenging yourself is great, but doing too much too soon is a common cause of runner burnout, not to mention injuries. Start off slow and gradually increase your pace as you get more comfortable. Remember not to ramp up your mileage too quickly; increase your total by only 10 percent every week.
Your strides are too long:Â It may feel good to bound down that trail, but if you make a habit of taking too-long strides, you may tire more quickly. Shorter strides are also easier on your knees, so if you find yourself going long, shorten your steps and see if it feels better.
You’re not consistent: It’s not going to get easier unless you stick with it. Try to run three times a week if you want to become a better runner; you’ll be amazed at how much easier that three-miler seems after just a few weeks of running.
Passing through this tunnel on the way to the local zoo (which has a nice paved trail around its perimeter) is my favourite part of doing Zombies, Run! while visiting at my parents' place. Transitioning from a bright sunny day to the dimly lit tunnel is creepy. Even with the wall light in there, the sudden change makes it very difficult to see, and your steps totally echo. Despite the visibility issues, you have to keep up your pace, lest your eyesight adjust to low light levels just before you exit into bright sunshine again.
I made it sound bad there in theory, but it's actually really fun in practice.

And finally, by mid-May, my new favourite running trail is more or less clear of snow.
Not clear of zombies, though, so I'd better keep running.

I was out for dinner and checking to make sure no zombies had attacked my base when I realized I'd unlocked buildings. It was then urgently important that I plan the distribution of my precious materials accordingly, and all I had to do so was this napkin.
I should have taken a picture of the final version, it was much more full. Oh well.

"A lot of us are-? Wait, was this a jab at the number of sports bras I bring in? I know they aren’t sexy, but they ARE practical, okay? Sports bras are amazing, nobody SETTLES for sports bras, so yeah, I collected a lot at Abel. Did someone from Abel tell you about my sports bra thing? Who told Phil about the sports bra thing? Or did you notice it independently? Because I’ll tell you what I’ve told everyone else, I am BUSTY with a SMALL ribcage and finding sports bras that FIT PROPERLY and are SUPPORTIVE was hard BEFORE the apocalypse and I am a RUNNER now so I will collect as many sports bras as a I damn well please and you can all deal thank you very much."
Wow, my Runner Five isn’t a very gracious gift accepter, is she? To be fair, I imagine this was all in her head, later, after she obsessed over the interaction with Phil to the point that she convinced herself that it WAS a jab at all the sports bras and not, you know, Phil just being nice. She was probably politely (but silently) accepting before that. I too warp innocent interactions after the fact because I worry a lot, and then I bounce between that worry and defensiveness, so my Runner Five has me to thank for that trait.

Sam mentions global warming, and immediately it starts blizzarding.
This was in the middle of April, by the way.
Oh, Canada.
~ M
I started using a new trail once the weather started warming up enough to melt and clear the snow out a bit. It goes around one side of Wascana Lake (it's not really a lake) and by the legislative building in Regina, SK, Canada and was recommended to me by my roommate. It's a really pretty, though somewhat busier, loop around water and I really like it.
It's also much better lit than my usual path, so I can go for atmospheric evening zombie runs if I want.
~ M
It was well into April before the paths were clear enough to run outdoors again. The first spring melt makes things kind of muddy and dreary, but that's pretty atmospheric when zombies are chasing you.

Oh...
~ M
One way to deal with too much snow to run is to cross country ski instead. Okay, I don't actually recommend this for regular missions (I really can't imagine chases working very well), but I did cross country ski 5k: Big Cheese (the first New Canton-side race mission) and it was fun.
I mean, the zombies don't have the benefit of skis. They just have to stumble through the snow banks. Actually, I bet I could've used my ski poles as weapons in a pinch, maybe even the skis themselves. I can take 'em off pretty quick. And the boots are kinda heavy, you could probably stomp in the brains of a zom or two with those. AND with all the snow gear I was wearing, it would be difficult to bite me anyway.
Zombies, Ski! sounds like a better option all the time...
