highkey think that ao3 is overintellectualized because wattpad, especially after its for-profit ad-monetization and book-to-film adaptation, kinda welcomed its slopification despite there being genuine people on there writing fics and leaving funny comments... but ao3, as a non-profit (which is good), didn't quite have that association with 'low-brow/mass-marketed' fanmade media. we're seeing more people not learning basic fanfic etiquette because there's a lack of a pipeline afforded by these monetized spaces. i went from fanfic.net to wattpad and quoted to ao3, and i feel like it massively benefitted me to flow through these spaces before landing on ao3, where I can comment something funny while acknowledging there is a PERSON maybe with a JOB or a LIFE behind the screen. i feel like a lack of liminal spaces has made people feel over-entitled to ao3 in a way akin to pretentious film majors, which explains why people are out here in ao3 comment sections acting like this is letterboxed and every fic has to be a magnum opus a24 film. people, especially recently, who are introduced to fanfic through ao3 feel like fanfic should be polished to deserve placement on the website, when that's not true or fair to writers. ngl i think wattpad was like Justice (the clothing store, to clarify ) and when it sold out, people lacking maturity started to flood whatever spaces they could, when in an ideal world, they'd be given the space to make childish flaws. they'd know basic shit like 'don't like, don't read', fanfic IS indulgent, or that no one owes you an update. sorry to ramble, but then again, this is tumblr.
