Whale Watching in Argentina
One of the things that makes Patagonia so magical place to visit is the great diversity of animal species that you encounter as you tour the region. While most of the major tourist destinations and attractions in Patagonia is located along the western border of Argentina and extend down through Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego, there are a few destinations along the Atlantic coast that are equally deserving of a visit. This is especially true if you are interested to do some whale watching during your time in Argentina. Whale watching season in Patagonia extends from June to December when a large number of Southern Right Whales come to the waters off the coast of Argentina to complete their breeding cycle. The Valdes Peninsula is one of the best places in Patagonia for detecting wildlife. Located 77km from Puerto Madryn, Valdes Peninsula is teeming with wildlife including sea lions, elephant seals, southern right whales, dolphins, penguins, Magellanic and even occasional Orca. The Valdes Peninsula was declared a UNESCO Natural Heritage of Humanity site in 1999. Visitors coming from the south of Argentina will immediately notice the changes in climate. Because of its location, temperatures in this area in Argentina is considerably warmer than in much of southern Patagonia. The small beach resort of Puerto Piramides is the only significant settlement on the Valdes Peninsula and serves as a starting point for whale watching excursions aboard small boats. It is entirely possible to schedule a whale watching tour from Puerto Madryn to spend a few hours in Puerto Piramides and back the same day, but if you have time you should try to spend a day or two in Puerto Piramides. Frequent second-class buses traveling between two locations that means getting back and forth on your own is easy and inexpensive. As in many parts of Argentina, in Puerto Piramides, there are many lodging options and restaurants that cater to travelers of all budgets. Visitors to the Valdes Peninsula will be charged a small fee upon arrival at the mainland has been designated a National Wildlife Reserve. Whether you're on a trip from neighboring Puerto Madryn, or spend a few days in Puerto Piramides you are only charged the fee once, unless of course you leave the boundaries of the reserve and try to re-enter in any case you will be charged a second time. In my experience, it is well worth spending a day or two in Puerto Piramides. There are many sights and attractions that you will probably miss otherwise, you should visit on a short day trip from Puerto Madryn.Once in Puerto Piramides, it is possible to rent a vehicle and explore the whole peninsula. Three miles outside town is a cliff overlooking place where whales can be seen from land. The viewpoint can be reached on foot by following the dirt road leading out of town. Puerto Piramides is also a lovely place to sit back and relax on the beach. Whale watching cruises can be booked on arrival for the very same day. There are several daily tours and evening tours sunset. Whichever tour you choose, the Whale watching season is almost guaranteed that you place a number of Southern Right Whales that are so commonly seen outside Argentina.Puerto Madryn can be reached by bus from Bariloche, as well as other popular towns and cities throughout Argentina. It is the perfect place to break up a long bus ride from Ushuaia and Buenos Aires. Depending on where you travel, it is important to keep in mind that bus travel throughout the Patagonia region may be slow in walking. In addition, strikes leading highway closures are common in Argentina and often complicate and delay journeys. Planning for this and keep in mind that even bus trips are a great way to see the country, if you hurry a few short flights can move through the region a lot faster.
