Hello, mate! Thank you! What better way to celebrate than with Bucky’s birthday, right? I absolutely adore this ask and have many thoughts! 💕

Monday and Thursday, 8am to 10am. Tuesday, 2pm to 4pm. Never one to let anything pass her by, Natasha is the first to notice that every week without fail, Bucky disappears with scheduled precision.

Steve is the first to say something, more out of concern than anything else. Bucky simply rips into the bag of Doritos that Sam was saving, crunching loudly with his mouth open until Steve sighs, leaving him be.

Bucky’s a ghost story. A group effort, strategy and even Tony’s tech is necessitated to locate the former assassin.

Monday morning finds the Avengers bursting into a lecture hall at Columbia University. The tutor is stunned, chalk falling from her fingers as she blinks in rapid succession at the superheroes.

Bucky whirls around from his spot in the first row, metal fingers tearing into the seat as he glares at his so-called friends.

Mathematics. He’s studying Mathematics.

“It’s not changed. Numbers and formulas are the same as they were back in the Forties. It still makes sense to me.”

Steve understands immediately. Bucky is an intelligent man. He had to be in order to wield a sniper rifle the way that he did in the war.

Tuesdays remain a mystery. Steve begs Tony to let the matter go but when does the snarky billionaire ever listen?

Bucky has never resembled the Winter Soldier more so than when Tony waves at him from across the room. A cooking class.

The Avengers’ Christmas card that year features Bucky in a novelty bikini body apron and chef’s hat, a Red Velvet Cake he baked in class clutched in his strong hands.

The secret’s out now. At least, until Natasha spies Bucky in a hot pink polo t-shirt, sneaking into one of the many rooms in the Avengers Compound on Wednesday afternoon.

A peer through a gap in the door. Shuri bears a proud expression. Peter Parker looms over Bucky.

“And why do we dress the way we do for these lessons, Mr. Bucky Sir?”

Steve: Bucky use to call me Steve.

CAN WE PLEASE TAKE A SECOND TO LOOK AT A ONE JAMES BUCHANAN  BARNES IN THIS SCENE PLEASE. (excuse the crap quality)

Look at how he holds himself, arm straight at his side, body tense, head lowered, same as everyone else… but that left hand, the way that he flexes it while bowing his head, like he’s too late, like he wants to do more but can’t, kind of resigned like his strings are about to be cut, like he’s coming to terms with the fact that the killing will. just. never. stop.

This is Bucky remembering clear as day how he killed both of Tony’s parents, how his actions as the Winter Soldier drove a wedge between Steve and Tony that they never fully recovered from, how he never got closure with Howard’s kid, never got to apologize or talk with him, how he wasn’t able to protect him, the same way he wasn’t able to protect Howard and Maria from Hydra.
