The bright summer sun crashed through your windows, through the lace curtains, drawing shadowy designs over your skin.
Birds were chirping, the city waking up, the sound traveling through your open window.
Yawning, you looked over to your beside table, grabbing your phone off of it. Rubbing your eyes that were heavy with sleep, you checked the time.
10:05 a.m
The sight jolted you completely awake, ripping you out of the soft blanket that was sleep. Practically falling out of bed you charged for your closet.
You are supposed to meet JJ and his friends at the beach for 11. Since you forgot to set an alarm, you weren’t sure you’d make it in time.
After rummaging through your closet for a minute or two, you quickly grabbed a swimsuit and threw it on, before adding jean shorts and a baggy t-shirt that fell slightly off your shoulder over it.
Slipping on your flip flops, you grabbed a random tote bag that was slung over the edge of your bed, speeding down the stairs and out your front door.
You looked down at your phone, 10:15 am.
You grinned, pocketing your phone, cheering internally, “that’s gotta be a new record.”
You darted to your car, not even bothering to start the music like you usually did, speeding out of your driveway and down the street.
Even though you wanted to make it in time, you still stopped at every stop sign and let a couple pedestrians walk across the street. You even stopped dead in the middle of the road so a family of bunnies could safely cross. What? It’s the kind of person you were.
Although, when you saw Topper in his fancy jeep at a four way stop sign, you romped on the gas after stopping, not letting him go, flashing him a petty grin as you sped past him.
Finally arriving to the beach, you checked the time again, 10:50 am.
You scrambled out of the car, slamming the door and practically running down to the hot golden sand.
JJ and the pogues were lounging on the sand. John B and Sarah laying on towels underneath the shade of a nearby tree. Kiara and Pope passing a volleyball back and forth.
But JJ? All he could do was stare at his watch, counting the minutes down.
He said 11, right? Did you forget? Maybe you got stuck in traffic? Or maybe..you just, didn’t want to come?
JJ shook the last thought out of his brain, clearing his throat.
John B looked up, his eyes flickering to Kie, waiting for her to say something.
Kie looked at him sympathetically, walking over to JJ and sitting down in the sand next to him, placing a comforting hand on his back.
“Hey..maybe she’s just running late.” Kiara assured him.
As if on cue, you stumbled into the sand, almost losing your balance as you halted to a stop when you saw the familiar head of bright blonde hair.
“I’m here!” you announced, leaning over, placing your hands on your knees as you attempted to catch your breath.
JJ’s head shot up, his previous expression of slight defeat turning into a brighter one in a second.
He jumped up, his usual cocky grin making its way back onto his face, “well look who showed up!”
You smiled, breath still coming out harshly, your heart beating rapidly in your chest, “might’ve forgot to set an alarm.” you explained, a cheerful spark gaining in your eye.
JJ put a dramatic hand to his heart, shaking his head, “what? the idea of hanging out with me isn’t exciting enough to wake you up?” he teased, grabbing his surf board from off the sand; turning it sideways and putting it under his arm.
You rolled your eyes playfully, but flashed him a quick grin, “maybe…maybe not!”
JJ let out a loud bark of laughter. John B cleared his throat from behind him, causing JJ to be suddenly aware that his friends were still here, and you weren’t the only one there, even though that’s how he felt.
Especially when he looked at you. Your bright expression, and positive presence blocked out everything else in the world, good or bad, it was just you.
“….Hello! Earth to jj!” a hand waved in his face, jj’s eyes snapping into focus. Now Pope was standing in front of him, a smug smile painted across his face.
JJ groaned, but he shifted slightly, so Pope wasn’t blocking his path to you.
“Alright are we gonna stand here and share our feelings or are we gonna surf?” he grumbled, grin still permanently sitting on his lips.
The pogues responded with loud cheers and shouts; all grabbing their boards and running down the hot sand and into the crashing of the cool blue waves.
But you lingered behind, standing, a bit awkwardly, clutching your tote bag in your hand. Looking out into the water.
JJ turned back, noticing your hesitation, “what’s the matter?” he asked, coming up beside you.
You shrugged, “well..don’t have a surf board, don’t know how to surf.”
Amusement spread across his features, “you live on an island..and, you don’t know how to surf?” he teased, but there was no malice in his tone, bumping his shoulder against yours.
You laughed softly, shrugging, “never learned, plus i did just move here you know.”
He nodded, “yeah, fair.” he hummed. Before looking up at you with a somehow wider grin than before, “cmon, come with me.”
Before you could even think about responding, he grabbed your hand with his free one, pulling you down the sand and closer to the water.
“Watch and learn, yeah?” he bragged, running into the water with his surfboard, effortlessly riding on the next wave that had rolled around.
You watched him with a stunned expression, admiring his ability to balance on the board and let the waves take him whatever.
Soon enough, her returned from the water, shaking his now wet hair and shooting you a wink.
“How’s that?” he prompted, wiggling his eyebrows confidently.
“Oh shut up, you know it was good.” you laughed, slapping his shoulder lightly.
He stumbled back like you had actually punched him across the face. “Alright, s’your turn now.”
You raised your eyebrows, shock spreading across your face, “you’re not serious.”
He kept his serious expression before bursting out into laughter, “no, ‘course not.”
He grabbed your hand again, interlocking your fingers, quite the intimate gesture for just meeting someone yesterday.
He pulled you towards him, looking down at the surfboard. “Here, sit.”
You followed his instruction, sitting down on the board, your legs hanging off either side. JJ pushed you out deeper into the water, trailing right beside you.
When you had gotten further out on the board he hopped on behind you, his chest slightly pressing against your back, causing your breath to hitch in your throat at the sudden contact.
JJ grinned at your reaction, even though you couldn’t see it. He pointed to a wave coming towards them, starting to stand up.
“C’mon, stand up angel.” he started, causing you to turn to look at him, a bewildered expression on your face. “No way! You’re crazy!” you said, not being able to help the small genuine smile that started to quirk up the corners of your lips.
He rolled his eyes, placing his hand out, waiting for you to grab it, “just trust me.”
And you did, for some reason.
Grabbing his hand, you both stood up on the board, JJ hooking an arm around your waist to steady you against him, he leaned in, his breath fanning out against the crook of your neck, “just trust me.” he repeated.
The wave came crashing towards the surfboard, lifting it up and over the wave, the excitement and wind blowing in your hair sent a jolt of adrenaline down your spine. JJ’s touch sending another wave of it right after.
After the two of you were pushed back towards the shore from the wave, you breathed out, “holy shit..that was..” you trailed off, cutting yourself off.
“Amazing? Thrilling? Everything you ever dreamed of?” JJ finished the sentence for you, smirking at you from over your shoulder, you could feel his wet hair pressed against the side of your face.
“Terrifying.” you finished, catching your breath. “But I guess those others words could work too.”
JJ laughed, the sound deep enough that it rumbled throughout your chest. “Don’t be like that, you know you loved it.”
You didn’t argue, because you absolutely did.
After surfing many waves, falling many times, and laughing at you and Sarah’s poor attempts at surfing, you and the pogues crashed on the sand just as the sun started to go down.
You laid back on the sand, watching the sun fall, the sky painted hues of orange, yellow, and pink.
Taking a soft breath and looking around at the pogues, a small smile played on your lips.
JJ was sat behind you, he leaned forward, his face now hanging over yours, “welcome to the pogues, angel.”
You grinned, reaching up to do the pogue handshake he had taught you earlier; slap, slap, snap.
Still looking down at you, JJ couldn’t help but stare. He noticed the way the setting sun shined on your face, highlighting your features. His heart quickened in his chest, thumping so loudly in his ears he was sure everyone around him could hear it.
“Same time tomorrow?” you proposed, half jokingly. But JJ nodded with a slight laugh.
“Oh you know it.” he paused, “..maybe just you and me, though.”
His comment caused your eyes to widen, remark dying off before it even left your lips.
At first, you weren’t sure if he was being serious. You had assumed not, after all, you two had just met yesterday.
But when you looked back up, meeting his gaze, you saw nothing that even suggested that he was joking, his eyes serious.
Noticing your shocked and slightly confused face, JJ quickly added on, “only if you want. of course.” he mumbled, “no pressure.”
Well you didn’t mean it like that. Your face faltered, troubled by his now saddened eyes.
“Yes!” you said, maybe a bit too eagerly. “I mean. No; yes, yes i would love that.” you assured him, nodding.
A genuine smile slowly made its way into his mouth, pursing his lips as he nodded, “good, wasn’t gonna take no for an answer anyway.” he added on, “you’re too cool for me to ditch you.”
“Oh yeah?” you teased, sitting up slightly, leaning back on your elbows, “i guess you’re not too bad yourself.”
JJ barked out laugher, throwing his head back, causing the pogues to finally look at over him with knowing and slightly mocking grins.
He rolled his eyes at them, waving them off dismissively, “what?” he grumbled.
“no, nothing, go ahead..don’t let us stop you.” kiara dragged out, nudging sarah who looked up at the pair with a wide toothed smile.
“Love’s in the air…” pope joined in with a singsong tone.
JJ huffed, kicking a bunch of sand over towards them, “shut up, all of you.” but a hint of blush trickled up his neck, spreading to the spot behind his ear, just below his jaw.
He turned, looking over at you, his defensive eyes softening just a bit, shaking his head, ‘so annoying…’ he mouthed towards you, so the others couldn’t see.
You grinned, humming, nodding in agreement.
As the sun fully set, and the sky started to turn dark, the pogues started to pack up.
After a minute, they started to walk towards the beach’s parking lot, where the only two cars left were the twinkie and yours; parked side by side.
You let out a loud laugh, that soon turned into a wheeze, “oh my god! this is your car! holy shit..” you laughed, doubling over.
JJ smirked, kie and sarah grinning at your expression, letting out a few laughs at your own, you even got a smile out of pope. But John B gasped, “how dare you! that’s my baby.” he said, walking over to the twinkie and putting a hand on it, pretending to whisper to the beat up car as he patted it.
The pogues loaded into the twinkie, you starting to walk over to your car, JJ telling John B to hold on as he followed you.
JJ’s heavy but deliberate steps caused you to turn around. He leaned against your car, whistling, “nice ride, angel.”
You shot him a lopsided smile, “i know right.”
You both sat in a comfortable silence for a minute, before JJ pulled his old phone out of his pocket, holding it up and waving it slightly, “give me your number? you know..so we can discuss..future plans.” he muttered the last part, clearly not sure of his own answer.
But you obliged, typing your number into his phone and saving it as a contact, JJ doing the same in your phone. He pointed at you as he handed you your phone back, “don’t ignore my texts, yeah? Or i’ll keep calling you until your phone blows up.” he joked, with a toothy smile.
John B honked, shouting at the window, “Alright lovebirds, hurry up!” Pope leaned out the passenger window; smacking the outside of the twinkie to get JJ’s attention, “my dad’s gonna kill me, let’s go!”
JJ groaned, “duty calls.” he stated, turning around walking towards the twinkie, getting in the back, he gave you one last smirk before shutting the door.
After the drive back home, you realized just how tired you were from all the surfing and soaking up the sun.
You tiredly stumbled up the stares, pushing your bedroom door open and flopping onto your soft bed.
Just as you felt yourself drifting off to sleep, your phone vibrated in the back pocket of your jeans.
Huffing, you pulled your phone out, the light shining brightly on your face, causing you to squint your eyes, scrambling to turn the brightness down.
After your eyes finally adjusting to the light, you read the notification. A text from JJ.
jj: goodnight angel
A deep blush surfaced on your cheeks. A bubble popping up, letting you know he was typing again.
jj: dream about me ;)
You rolled your eyes at his second text, but the smile stayed on your lips. you quickly typed a response back.
you: hope not, i don’t love nightmares.
You put your phone down with a soft laugh, it vibrated a couple seconds later.
You didn’t get a text back, just a notification ‘jj reacted to your message 👎🏻’
With that, your eyes finally shut, drifting off to sleep with a soft smile and a certain boy filling your dreams.

You were never the party type. You liked everything that made up a party. Music, dancing, fun. All that was great!! Adding alcohol and teenage boys into the mix is where it became a slight problem for you.
But you were new to town. And you had to make friends somehow!
On your second day in Kildare you met a girl outside of a coffee shop. And the two of you clicked instantly.
She invited you to a party on a beach that was happening tonight. Of course, wanting to fit in, you eagerly agreed.
It was late when you walked into the party with the girl, Lily, you met at the coffee shop. She had waited for you to arrive, standing outside in the beach parking lot, saying ‘you shouldn’t have to walk in alone!’
You were grateful for that, Lily seemed genuinely kind, not like she was only being kind to get something from you. Which was rare.
As the two of you walked onto the beach, a group of girls yelled Lily’s name, waving her over to them. Lily turned to you, offering a quick sympathetic smile, “i’m just gonna say hi real quick, i promise, then i’ll come back to you, okay?”
You hesitated, she was the only person you knew there. But you didn’t want to be a bother and keep her from her friends. So, you agreed, “i’ll just be over getting a drink.”
Lily grinned, “thank you so much! be right back, promise!” she said as she started to walk towards the group, the girls erupting in a loud chatter when she reached them.
Lily never came back.
For a good chunk of the party, you stood awkwardly by the drinks table, arms wrapped around yourself, rocking back on your heels occasionally.
Every so often, your eyes would trickle over to where Lily and her friends were standing. Most of you understood, she wanted to hang out with her friends. But a part of you was a little bummed. Lily knew that you had just moved here, and had literally no friends, so why would she leave you all alone at a party?
“Hey there.” a voice snapped you out your thoughts, your gaze falling on a teenage boy now standing in front of you, a drink in his hand.
“Oh, hi!” you said cheerfully, glad someone had actually acknowledged you.
The boy grinned at you, “I’m not sure i’ve seen you around before, you new?” he asked.
You nodded, giving a small smile, “yeah, i just moved here!”
He nodded, eyeing you, “I’m Topper.”
You and Topper talked for a bit. You liked him at first. He seemed charming and kind. But as time went on, you found yourself desperately searching for an out in the conversation.
Topper didn’t really let you get a word in, constantly rambling on about whatever, just expected for you to sit and listen.
After he continue to drag on, you stopped listening at some point. Looking around the party, adding a few ‘oh yeahs’ and ‘really?’s’ to make it seem like you were actively engaged.
Topper’s next question got your full attention, “So, you got a boyfriend back home?”
A blush creeped up your neck, embarrassed by the sudden vulnerable state he had put you in, “Oh! No, no..no boyfriend.”
Topper got a weird look in his eye, his grin spreading. He took a step closer, invading your personal space. “No? Why’s that?”
You took notice of the sudden intrusion of your space, growing uncomfortable. Trying to back away, but every step you took back, Topper took a step forward.
Across the sand, a pair of light blue eyes were glued to you, and now, Topper.
JJ’s jaw clenched, muscles jumping. Topper was way too close to you. And from where he was sitting? It didn’t look like you were enjoying his advances at all.
“What’s got you all serious?” Pope said from next to JJ. Following his intense stare, Pope’s eyes landed on you.
“Oh..her. Yeah, shes new.”
JJ hummed in response, not being able to form a coherent sentence at the moment. All of his brain power focused on the way Topper was stalking closer to you like a predator.
“Don’t be a dick, J, I heard she’s real sweet.” Pope said flatly, warning him.
JJ ripped his eyes away from you to wink at Pope, “a dick? c’mon man, i’m the nicest person on the island.”
“Yeah, sure, bud.”
When he glanced back towards you and saw Topper’s hands grabbing at your waist while you tried to back away, something broke inside him.
He all but jumped up, walking across the sand with long, powerful strides, as his eyes were dead locked on you, at one point, shoving someone out of his way so he could get to you sooner.
Once he got right behind Topper, he slapped a hand against his shoulder, holding it there. JJ moved him back slightly. Topper stumbling trying to catch his balance.
“Hey Top! Haven’t seen you in a while, how are you brother?” JJ exclaimed, still gripping Topper’s shoulder roughly, in a way that did not match his friendly tone.
You watched the situation play out in front of you, backing away from Topper. You had no idea who this guy was, but you were grateful he had saved you from Topper’s prying hands.
Topper scoffed, shrugging JJ’s steady hand off his shoulder, “don’t fucking touch me, pogue.” he spat out.
JJ held his hands up in surrender, “yeah, yeah you’re right, my bad bro.”
“Yeah. It is.” Topper mumbled, turning back to you. Noticing you had taken a couple steps back, creating space between you and him. “Hey, where you going baby? Thought we were having a good talk?”
You tried to laugh it off awkwardly, but as Topper tried to walk closer towards you, your smile dropped, being quickly replaced with a look of fear.
JJ immediately put himself between you and Topper without a second thought. His frame covering you, shielding you from Topper’s intense energy.
“Yeah, not today, Top.” JJ commented, his serious tone leaving no room for argument.
“Get out of my way, Maybank, this doesn’t involve you.” Topper protested, trying to push past JJ. But he didn’t budge, holding his position in front of you.
“Yeah, but see, you’re clearly making her uncomfortable. So do everyone a favor and just walk away.”
JJ and Topper stared at each other for what felt like forever.
Eventually Topper huffed, and started to walk backwards, mumbling an annoyed ‘whatever’ before turning around fully and walking away.
After a beat, JJ turned to face you. A flicker of concern appearing in his eyes, “you good?”
You swallowed, nodding softly, “yeah..yeah, i’m good. Thank you - for, you know, doing that.”
JJ shrugged, “no big deal, Topper was being a dick.”
“You’re new, right?” JJ continued, now looking at you with a more casual glance, a grin curving the sides of his lips upward.
You nodded, “Yeah..! I just moved here.”
JJ nodded, grin growing by the second. “Well Topper was a pretty shitty introduction to the island. But i can fix it, don’t’ya worry your pretty little head ‘bout that.”
You blushed at his words, but nodded regardless.
Your reaction amused JJ, “here, come with me.”
He said before gently grabbing your hand, intertwining your fingers with his own, pulling you towards the dock overlooking the ocean.
Away from the noise of the party, it was peaceful. The distant sounds of music and loud voices was still there, but the calming crashing of the waves and breeze of the wind filled your ears.
You and JJ sat on the edge of the dock, legs swinging over the water. JJ leaned back on his arms, using one hand to point up to the sky.
“That, right there is the North Star.” he mumbled, you followed his hand, looking up at the sky.
He turned to look at you, eyes softening. “m’sorry about earlier. These kooks, they kinda suck.”
That got a soft laugh out of you, the sound surrounding him, ringing in his ears.
It was a sound JJ thought he could listen to for the rest of his life.
“Yeah, guess they kinda do.” you agreed.
“I’ll make it up to you.” JJ confirmed, “Me and my friends are a lot more fun, and respectful. Don’t do that weird kook shit.”
For some reason, you believed him. You hadn’t even known him for a day, and yet, you believed every word that came out of his mouth.
“Tell you what,” he prompted, standing up, offering his hand to you.
You took his hand, standing up as well.
“Tomorrow, you come to the beach with me and my friends. We surf, we swim; chill.”
A smile played on your lips, looking up at him, “sounds like fun! I would love to!” maybe you would actually make friends. One that didn’t leave you at parties alone, or creepily flirt with you after 10 seconds of knowing you…
JJ grinned, a boyish, lopsided smile that brightened his face, “good. can’t wait. meet here at say..11? You don’t need to bring anything, just your beautiful self.”
You nodded, smile growing wider, “i’ll be there.”
JJ pointed as he started to walk away, “don’t leave me hanging, angel! i’ll be waiting for you!”
With that, JJ walked back onto the sand and towards his group of friends; leaving you with a stupidly big grin on your face and a new excitement for tomorrow.
When JJ sauntered back over to the pogues with a smirk, John B and Pope eyed him with a knowing look, Kie with an annoyed one.
“What?” JJ asked innocently, even though he knew why his friends were looking at him like that.
He flopped down onto the sand beside the small fire they had previously lit.
“Already corrupting the new girl?” a voice teased, John B.
JJ rolled his eyes, “No, I asked her to come hang out with us tomorrow.”
Kie gasped, looking around in a mock shocked manner, “no way. The JJ Maybank actually wants to hang out with a girl instead of just sleeping with her? I can’t believe it. You heard it here first, folks. JJ’s player days are over.”
While John B and Pope erupted with laughter, practically falling backwards, JJ just groaned, but there was no heat behind it.
He threw an empty beer can at her, “really funny, Kie. Seriously.”
But it was true. JJ was looking forward to hanging out with you tomorrow.
In fact, he was looking forward to seeing you around a whole lot more.

synopsis: fem!reader likes to disappear after hard days. especially when it involves your family. the beach after sunset is your top pick. unfortunately, a certain blonde pogue likes to hang around there too.

Your house was quiet. Unusually so. Not the comfortable and filling kind of silence either. It was painful, agonizing.
Your family’s house was never quiet. There was always some sort of sound echoing through the luxurious yet void walls.
It was always something. Your father, screaming on the phone in his office. The shut door not doing much good, the sound still carried through the large house, it shuddering under his booming tone.
Your mother, whose heavy footsteps thudded up the stairs, bursting into your room. She’d only come in to find something she didn’t like; pick at you and scold you for it, like you were a child again.
Your brother, in the next room over, huffing out breaths, swearing under it. Before loud cracks shook your walls, as his fist connected with it.
In summary, your family was absolutely broken apart. It didn’t matter how much money you had, or the reputation you were born with, you were born into a house that had no love, no connection, just strict business.
So, you needed a place to get away. You discovered it back when you were thirteen, your own little path leading straight to the ocean.
Out the back door, past your mother’s beloved rose bush, and in the tight space between your property and the neighbors, keep walking down the barely there path and eventually you’d start to see the golden sand and calm waves.
This was your place, you’d declared it as such the moment you saw it.
It was quiet enough that you didn’t feel like your brain was exploding with ten thousand other thoughts, but there was enough noise that it didn’t start to feel like your ‘home’.
No one ever came here. That’s why it was so special.
Well, people did come here, but not after sunset, in the late hours of the night.
So that’s when you came.
Unfortunately for you, the last couple times you had come to your secret spot, you discovered it was no longer a secret.
A blonde boy. Sitting on the dock, a joint in one hand, or sitting on the sand, a bottle next to him.
And every time you saw him?
You turned right back around and went home.
You came here to be alone, not socialize. So why would you even put yourself in a situation that might force you to socialize.
As you walked along the closed in path, you held your breath, hoping that blonde boy wasn’t there this time.
As the path came to and end, and you submerged from the bushes, you squinted your eyes and looked around.
Without a doubt, he was there.
You huffed, about to turn back around; but you paused. Stopping your movement to really think about it.
What if i just..sit super far away? Maybe he won’t try to talk to me! you thought to yourself, convincing yourself to stay.
He was sat on the boardwalk, so you walked to the further end of the sand and sat there, looking out into the water.
Apparently, this kid has like superhero hearing because his head whipped around the second you took a step in the sand.
His eyes darted around the dark environment, eventually landing on you.
Hoping he would eventually look away, you sat down in the sand, not looking back at him, but you could feel his eyes following your every movement.
Eventually, you slipped, your eyes darting and meeting his gaze from across the beach.
Expecting him to look away, you held the glance, waiting. Except he didn’t look away. He continued looking in your eyes, before a slight grin made the corners of his lips quirk up. His eyebrow slightly raised as if he was waiting for you to say something.
While you held the eye contact, you just now realized how beautiful he was.
Sandy blonde hair being illuminated by the moonlight, the sharp edge of his jawline on display. Bright blue eyes with a certain look in them.
Caught up in analyzing his appearance, you didn’t realize that he slipped out of your view.
You didn’t notice he was moving from his previous spot until he was standing right in front of you.
Jesus, that was fast.
You thought to yourself, angling your head up slightly from your spot on the sand, the boy now standing over you, his shadow covering you.
Up close, you could see his blonde hair was messy, his eyes were glossed over, and his clothes were dirty, the bottom of his tshirt slightly frayed.
When you finally met his gaze, the grin on his face only grew bigger; a boyish expression that made him seem like trouble. And he probably was.
“You got a staring problem or something?” he asked, but his tone didn’t carry any real bite, instead it was filled with amusement. His eyes dancing curiously over you, like he was trying to figure you out.
You cleared your throat, ripping your eyes off of his and looking out towards the water, “Sorry..” you mumbled, embarrassed.
A soft chuckle fell out of his lips, a shrug rolling of his shoulders. “Don’t be, i was messing with you.” he said, sitting down on the sand next to you without an invitation.
“Come out here often?” he questioned, inhaling the lit joint he was fidgeting with in his hand. Looking at you, he reached the joint out to you, raising an eyebrow, silently asking if you wanted a hit.
Your eyes traveled down to the joint, before up at him, shaking your head, “i don’t smoke.”
He nodded, amused by your answer, blowing out a puff of smoke. “Got it, no smoking, cool.”
“Why are you here?” you blurted out, shutting your mouth quickly after. This got a scoff out of him, “it’s a public beach.” You shook your head, sighing, “Duh. I meant, why are you here.” you gestured to where he was sitting, “Why did you come over here?”
He grinned, turning his body to look at you more clearly, “I need a reason?”
You shrugged. He paused, still staring at you, “Why are you here? Maybe then I’ll tell you why i’m here.” he whispered playfully.
You couldn’t hold back the eye roll. Which entertained him greatly, a quiet laugh rumbling throughout his chest, the sound deep and gravely.
“I just..like it here.” you explained simply, “better than..” you started, but cut yourself off. Why exactly were you about to tell a stranger all about your family problems? You weren’t sure.
“Better than…?” he mimicked, waiting for you to continue. “Better than your giant kook house?” he laughed, shaking his head, taking another puff out of the joint, “hard to believe.”
Your head whipped to glare at him. How dare he? He doesn’t know you, why should he get to make assumptions on your life.
“Excuse me?” you replied, raising an eyebrow, shocked at his lack of a filter.
“What? I’m right, aren’t I?” he challenged; which made you huff in response.
“I don’t think it’s fair you get to make assumptions about me and my life, when I don’t even know your name.” you spoke, crossing your arms defensively.
“JJ, there, now you can tell me why a kook princess like yourself sneaks out of your mansion to sit depressingly on the beach.” he grins, putting out the joint in the sand, stepping on it.
You let a silence fall over the two of you, debating whether she should tell the boy - JJ - whether she should tell JJ or not about her dysfunctional family dynamics.
“I hate the change.” you admitted, looking down at your hands that were subconsciously drawing small designs in the sand.
JJ looked up to listen, but he didn’t say anything yet, letting you continue.
“It goes from being my worst nightmare during the day to, eerily silent at night.” you continued, sighing out, “it sucks. just..it just sucks.”
JJ nodded like he understood, looking out into the ocean. “I get it. Same way back at my place. My old man’s either drunk outta his fuckin’ mind screaming and shit, or passed out on the couch.” he confessed.
The air between you two became extremely vulnerable out of nowhere, both of you sharing secrets to someone they had never talked to before.
“I’m sorry..” you said softly, because you truly were. His situation sounded hard, reminded you of how it was for you back home.
He shrugged, dismissing your apology, “S’fine. Not a big deal.”
But it was. He knew it, you knew it. But neither of you said anything, refused to acknowledge it. Instead you looked up to the sky, pressing your arms behind you, leaning on them. JJ followed your line of vision, his eyes flicking up to the dark night sky littered with stars.
JJ flopped onto the sand, fully laying against it. You watched him before doing the same. The two of you laying side by side.
His arms were crossed against his chest, “I love looking at the stars.” he mumbled, “I lay on the dock and just look at them, best part of my day.”
You smiled at that, a true, genuine smile. None of that practiced fake shit you put on at the country club or at the dinner table. Your eyes analyzing the sky, wandering along the stretch of it.
You noticed JJ shift, propping himself on his elbow, you knew his eyes were no longer up at the sky, but now on you. But you didn’t turn to look at him, your focus fixed on a star you were tracing with your finger, hand outstretched to the dark blue sky.
“It’s so beautiful..” you mumbled, breathing out a breath you didn’t know you were holding.
JJ hummed, “Yeah..” he spoke, his breath slightly hitched.
He couldn’t help but stare at your face illuminated by the moonlight, your eyes sparkling with wonder as you gazed at the stars, your hair fanned out around your face against the sand.
JJ fell back down on his back, looking back up at the sky. “Yeah, real beautiful.” he spoke, but his voice was heavier, filled with an emotion you couldn’t quite figure out.
