looks like mornin’ in your eyes .
honey // 7.15.2019
I crave the sweetness, the honey drizzled between my sheets that I lick from your fingertips under the veil of the moon. I yearn for the sugar high, the rising buzz that can only come from You - stuck in my hair and between my thighs - your sticky sweet addictive love.
distance // 6.25.2019
If folding the map could bring point a to point b,
I’d make a garden of origami flowers
dense enough to close the distance from you to me.

burn // 6.25.2019
I would torch my bed
in hopes of driving away
the you-shaped cold left
between my sheets.
But in the flames,
I would only see your eyes
and beg to burn faster.

Put nothing down now, you’ll have nothing to lose later.
Your logic has been flawed since the second month of your junior year,
but three years later, you’re grasping for straws again
so you find yourself once more pushing your alarm back
and praying a glass of stale water will get you through.
But lo, out of the safety of your bed
you are force-fed the fears that fuel the fire,
anxiety again ablaze somewhere deep within that exact spot -
you can picture the diagram in your biology textbook,
Recite the terms over and over
(which sphincter won’t close, which muscle won’t relax)
as if the consistency of your precious science
could quell the chaos, the magma rising, rising,
the metallic taste, cold sweat,
not unlike an old friend.
Hadn’t you missed the chill of bathroom tiles on your bruised knees?
The bitter, biting bile a delectable reminder of your own surrender
to the dreaded them that spoon feed you the harshest poison
but covered in chocolate, so it tastes like love?
Three years and you’ve still yet to find the antidote
to your condition that confines you to this porcelain prison
So stow your shackles up your sleeve,
don’t let them hear the clatter as they shake you down.
Nullify it for a while but the devil always finds a way
to slip back through the door while you’re checking the lock.
Carapaces // 4.20.2019
The children don’t play here anymore - too grown for ramshackle houses, memories bleached out by the sun as chitinous white walls disintegrate.
If you listen closely, the hollow homes still whisper their stories before the gulls pick them clean and the tide claims them again.
The wrong place at the right time, settlers of a realm never meant to be theirs. Who mourns these shattered structures and the bodies that left them on the shore?
Interstellar Lovers // 2.14.2019
White hot,
The likeness of which a childhood of stargazing could never prepare me for.
Two planets colliding in a celestial pa de deux, finally surrendering to the pull that kept them orbiting slowly around each other for eons.
Galaxies bloom across my rib cage and adorn my hip bones, emblems of a hundred explosions within
Over and over
As your universe expands into mine, mine into yours.
Breath bated but air abuzz, we hurdle to the edge, stars streaking past like bolts of lightning in an inky sky.
When a star burns as bright as it can, brighter than ever before, she collapses in on herself - a magnificent suicide tearing a hole in the very fabric of the Milky Way.
Release your breath, kiss me again, and promise me we’ll still be interstellar lovers on the other side.

Of Lilacs & Sunsets (ladybug take 1) // 2.11.2019
The summer you turned five,
you’d spend every sunset where your front yard met Hillview
searching for flowers with your grandmother.
The plants became your confidants,
and by the time school started again, you knew each one by name.
You loved the way gladiolus rolled off your tongue,
and foolishly made wishes on three-leaf clovers,
but what intrigued you most were the lilacs -
dainty purple constellations, tended to by all the women that preceded you.
And though you knew how it would end, every night, you’d try to pick a few
and march back into the kitchen with fistfuls of purple powder,
and a heart full of defeat.
The summer you turned eighteen,
you stood on the lawn at sunset amidst a sea of nervous bodies
and found your gaze locked with a pair of olive eyes.
She moved like the gentle change of the tides,
but you remembered what your own clumsy hands did to delicate flowers,
so you shoved them in your pockets and smiled shyly.
And for every sunset after, you’d watch her snag words out of thin air
and weave them into a breathtaking tapestry of poetry,
lamenting the books you dedicated yourself to for over a decade
that failed to teach you why you got goosebumps whenever she said your name
or when her hand grazed your arm mid-conversation
or how to tell her just that.
So you introduced her to the Ilex opaca and Melospiza melodia,
and you folded your heart into paper birds to slip in her pockets,
and each night you filled your tea with gobs of the honey you once resented
because the sweetness that once stuck in your throat
now you imagine tastes like her smile,
and you’d do anything to collect the fragments of her,
stitch them over the patches of your own soul
that have worn since the summer of lilacs and sunsets
and feel whole again.
And although you moved away from Hillview years ago,
without a tiny purple souvenir of summertime longing,
you’ve learned how to love beautiful flowers from afar.
escapril day 9: focus on color // 4.9.2019
White:
light, new fallen snow, a blank page,
a fresh start,
a promise,
and exactly how two lips finding mine
felt for the first time
(and that’s how I knew he’d change my life).
escapril day 8: a love poem // 4.8.2019
You didn’t have to love me
like I was one of yours,
when I was just a floating dingy
in need of guiding oars.
You didn’t have to teach me
everything you knew,
you didn’t have to water me
to ensure I grew.
The shoes of someone missing,
you didn’t need to fill.
I didn’t appreciate it back then,
but now I forever will.
For me you fought great battles,
and tried not to let it show.
If I could be so selfish,
I ask you not to go.
There’s so much I still have to learn,
and so much world to see -
how am I to do it all
without you next to me?
escapril day 7: start with a time of day // 4.7.2019
2:44 PM.
Infinite moments lie before you -
paper cups on a windowsill
waiting for a spoonful of dirt
and a tiny seed.
Infinite chances for making wishes,
and singing into the wind,
and diving into the ocean,
and trying -
oh so hard -
to remember how it felt
the instant the world was still new:
2:44 PM.
escapril day 6: nostalgia // 4.6.2019
For Gabriel.
Veins under his skin
chart a map of days gone by -
my living keepsake.
Memories stitched to
the palms of his hands, always
there to slip mine in.
Trusted friend, soulmate -
the last surviving relic
of a simpler time.

escapril day 4: anxiety // 4.4.19
Flies.
A change of wind brings them back -
relentless apparitions gnashing their teeth,
snickering their tempting lies.
I ache to grind their exoskeletons into the picnic table,
staunch their deceitful taunts;
but they cover me -
bore through my eyes and ears to implant eggs in my brain.
I am a slave to the parasite that gnaws on me from the inside out,
chewing away the flesh of who I once was
and leaving me full of holes:
microscopic portals from which my soul spills
only to be replaced by bitter bile.
I claw at the welts, blood stuck underneath my nails
attracting uncomprehending pity from the friends that loved me --
still love me? Never loved me?
The clacking of teeth echoing in my skull makes it hard to hear the truth
so I must substitute with the realities they feed me.
escapril day 3: incorporate music // 4.3.19
No grand finale.
You can hide beneath your covers and study your pain,
the whole time sleeping in the jail right next to me.
Write it on your heart, dear, you were never mine.
Walking through the heavy light, the streets are empty,
and isn't this exactly where you'd like me.
You said I've lost my head and you won't let go
while I ignore that we both felt like this before.
Try, try, but there’s no sign of life.
The love that I gave, wasted.
