We know that sexism is what demands that womenâs bodies be small and we know that women cannot actually experience authentic freedom or life on our terms within a system of subjugation; we can only ever reap the benefits that the subjugation has deemed appropriate for our obedience.

Great quote from Gloria Steinem for Feminist Friday!
In 2011, the Institute of Medicine released a report on the health of LGBT Americans which noted that lesbian and bisexual women âmay be at greater risk of obesityâ than their heterosexual counterparts.
In response, the Office on Womenâs Health, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, launched its Healthy Weight in Lesbian and Bisexual Women (HWLB) program the following year.
Now, a team of researchers has tested the HWLB program in over 250 participants ages 40 and older across 10 cities. Not only is their study in Womenâs Health Issues the first of its kind, a full 95 percent of the women in these pilot programs achieved at least one of the programâs goals.
A landmark study helped lesbian and bi women reach fitness goals by focusing on health rather than thinness

Concentrating on divisions between feminist generations ignores the continuities between present-day activists and their feminist foremothers. Much of the work that is ongoing among feminist activists today represents a continuation of the work begun by women in the past.
Rory Dicker, A History of U.S. Feminisms
When I first tell someone that I write about books by trans people, I often get the reply that they would just loooove to bring trans authors into their reading life but they just donât like reading memoirs. This is when I eat my fist to stop from yelling at the poor person. I suppose it isnât their fault that memoirs have been the primary way for trans people to be published by any of the big publishing houses and have therefore saturated the market of easily accessible books by trans authors, but Iâm consistently frustrated by the assumption that the list of trans authors is limited to Janet Mock, Jennifer Finney Boyan, and Julia Serano.
In creating this list Iâve tried to draw in a variety of authors of different levels of awareness in the public eye. The keen-eyed reader will notice that some authors appear in multiple genre categories. This is just my attempt to represent the diversity that can exist within a single authorâs work.

We love Julia Serano, but your reading of trans authors should not begin and and with her. Check it out!
There are lots of traditionally âfemaleâ tasks that Iâve never quite gotten a grasp on: walking in very tall heels, putting on eyeliner, wearing flattering pants. But while Iâm okay with my fashion and beauty choices leaning toward the whatever-is-easiest option, thereâs one arena
Mostly what I write these days is about celebrities, but Refinery29 let me get a little personal. Ironically, yesterday I got my couch cleaned (because Iâd spilled seltzer on it) and it looks amazing, so maybe I have some hope in the domestic arena after all!
An excellent essay on the strange intersection of internalized expectations and feminism by one of our Seal authors @rkb

Work towards becoming a better leader by exploring the thought-provoking essays in the book that Queen Bey herself recommended (omg!), Marianne Schnallâs collection of essays: What Will It Take To Make a Woman President; read a collection of quotes in Hillary Clinton In Her Own Words; and finally, seek a more thorough understanding of the path that has brought us to this landmark moment with the newly revised edition of A History of U.S. Feminisms.

On National Donut Day, a friendly remember that FOOD IS NEUTRAL!
Youâre not being âbadâ if you nom a treat. <3
(The only time we feel naughty about donuts is when weâre stopping by Doughnut Dolly for a cream-filled treat. Shout out to one of our fav local, woman-owned shops!)
Happy National Donut Day! Did you know it began in celebration of womenâs contributions to the war effort?
"During World War I, women volunteering for the Salvation Army made doughnuts for soldiers serving overseas as a way to boost morale. National Doughnut Day was launched in 1938 by the Chicago branch of the Salvation Army, in part as a way to raise funds for, and awareness of, the organizationâs work in the community. But the spirit behind the day was the recognition of these womenâs contribution to the war effort.â âThe Surprising History Behind National Doughnut Day, Time.comÂ
Weâll eat to that.

Loneliness is subjective; and itâs not the same as being alone. One can be alone and not feel lonely; we can also be surrounded by people and still feel lonely. ...the sensation of loneliness is simply information that youâre ready to feel more connected to others.

As you may have seen on Google, today would have been Yuri Kochiyama's 95th birthday. To honor her memory, we wanted to reshare this artwork and her profile from the Seal Celebrates Women campaign published during Women's History Month.
Yuri Kochiyamaâs life changed on December 7, 1941, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Practically overnight, she went from grade-school teacher to internment camp prisoner, as she and her remaining family were forcibly relocated.
Once freed, she and her husband Bill Kochiyama moved to Harlem in New York City and Yuri began participating in sit-ins, inviting the Freedom Riders to speak at open-houses she held in her apartment. The momentum of the Civil Rights and especially the Black Nationalist Movement captured Kochiyamaâs focus, and shortly thereafter she befriended Malcolm X, communicating with him through letters and postcards for more than a year. She was present at his assassination, and a famous Life magazine photo shows her cradling his head in her hands moments after he was shot.
Yuri became increasingly involved and radicalized in various components of the Civil Rights Movement and, in 2005, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
