when ryan asks naim if there's anything he likes about the place, and naim's little sly grin when he realises ryan is fishing for a compliment... and he refuses ryan the satisfaction, even with his expression and his actions plainly stating otherwise, he shakes his head. "no. nothing." because he's learning now that he has power too. the first time they were here, ryan initiated because naim wouldn't dare, despite them both wanting the same thing. but now, naim understands that he can also initiate. he can have this, and not just be a passive participant.

the second scene at the mill is sooo dear to me bc it’s actually preceded by /this/ one from naim’s memories montage after the break up. it’s so interesting to me how they go from ryan’s abrupt change in behaviour & the refusal to share an intimate moment w naim to them chilling on the floor and ryan asking naim if there’s something (someone) he likes about bandee… ryan who’s always only known shame and pain in regards to his sexuality, doesn’t comprehend how to engage with what he feels if not through violence (the stoning w hunter, the roughhousing w naim) until naim comes into his life. pushing naim away the moment he tries to show him there’s alternatives to self-punishment… naim may not be his /first/ but he taught ryan so many things
