OH man these are so darn pretty.. I envy peeps with water colour skills
Was expecting a monster romp like the 'predecessor' but got a clever film about domestic abuse. So damn good. I just wish I'd seen it sooner. β β β β

I dunno..
I found this "Lets make Gumishiiru of Fragrance" in Kinokuniya today. It immediately reminded me of the Creepy Crawlers bug making toy machines from the 90's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZyGIf_nCwU
It comes with 3 coloured liquids and this "magic powder". It took me about 30min to translate the majority of the instructions, but I understood that one whole bottle of colour requires one satchel of powder. You can mix the colours up to make new colours too. I went half yellow & blue for a green set. You mix the colours up in the provided paper cup then add the powder and mix until its not lumpy. You then microwave it for about 30sec where it goes from a thick honey consistancy to a runny liquid. From there you pour it into the mold and leave it undisturbed for 30min to set. Once done it has the same properties of those sticky slap hands you used to find in those cheap gumball machines, but instead of stinking of plastic, it smells of sickly sweet fake apples. It was a fun exercise and I'm a sucker for anything with rhinoceros beetles.
A sombre but colourful musical set in Glasgow, about a girl dealing with her demons and her run in with 2 other musicians. Peter Pan dresses, indie museos all to the vibe of Belle & Sebastian. I did find it strange Hannah Murray once again gets the character name Cassie though. β β
I originally bought Bandai's 'Soul of Chogokin: GX-34 Gunbuster' toy back in 2006. I didn't know the anime, I just thought it was a really cool looking robot. Two spaceships which combined into this cape wearing badass that had lasers that came out of everywhere. Fast forward 9 years and I finally discover what it was all about.
Gunbuster (Aim for the Top!) an 6 part OVA series from 1988, all about a school girl, Noriko, who trained to be a space pilot because her father was. She idolizes another pilot Kazumi whom she pairs up with, to pilot Gunbuster. Gunbuster was built to combat these space monsters trying to wipe out humans, a whole bunch of time displacement happens and a huge battle where Gunbuster saves the day..
It's a haphazard story to follow.
Queue Diebuster (Aim for the Top 2!) a sequel 6 part OVA series from 2006. Another girl, Nono, with dreams to be a space pilot and also idolizes over another space pilot, Lal'C. Insert more space monsters, a bunch of new robots called Buster Machines and their teenage pilots and another huge ridiculous battle to save mankind.
Gainax were behind both series, but they have completely different art styles. Sure, almost 20 years between the series plays a role, but Diebuster had some of the art team and FLCL director Kazuya Tsurumaki behind it and it shows. Especially the first battle sequence, it just oozes FLCL.
Separately both series are a bit silly and farfetched. Watching Diebuster, it just felt like history repeating and it wasn't until the last scene that everything just meshed and the relation between both series was made apparent, which made the whole journey worthwhile.
However, I find this hard to recommend to the average person. Its okay, but I'd recommend FLCL or Gurren Lagann before even mentioning this. It's not a huge time investment however and for me that's perfect and it filled in the story behind one of the robots that sits on my shelf.

Messing with paper inserts.. Its difficult. The curved surfaces magnify parts and I need to find a way to hold it in place when pouring. Also rookie error not shaking the resin bottles before mixing and thus the legs didn't set. #leglesssquidy #makemyowntoyproject #squidy

It's Japanese Film Festival time again. I'm starting it off with Short Peace. 4 animated short films. I enjoyed it as a whole. Some more than others. 'Possesions': about a lost traveler stumbling across an abandoned shrine was really cute. That umbrella frog was adorable. 'Combustible': set in feudal times was a bit sad, but I like how it was told like a moving emakimono (picture scroll). 'Gambo' was pretty awesome. A white bear protecting a girl/small villiage from a huge demon. I kinda almost wish it was an OVA. and finally my favourite of the lot: 'A Farewell to Weapons': it was about a squad of guys who were disarming weapons in a post apocalypic world. Definately had a Patlabor/Ghost in the Shell feel to it. And rightly so, as it had legendary mecha designer Hajime Katoki behind it. Just fantastic.
