My new friend
My friend is cool. She is everything I love about people. She has the toughest most baddest exterior in the land. Her very badly-kept secret though, is she is such a softie. The softest. She has no walls.
Our very first meeting had me intrigued. She walks around with her heart hanging off her sleeve. As someone who has walls of fire and traps and trenches around my heart, I looked at her with so much worry. I watched as she loved and loved and loved and not once did she shy away, not once did she brace herself for heartbreak, not once did she doubt love. Surely she’s insanely I thought then.
Surely she’s insane, I still think. She’s insane enough to miss all the walls I had put up in fear. She’s insane enough to joyously walk the tedious path to my hidden heart. She walked with mirth in her step as she approached my heart. She expected to find it and find it she did. She missed all the ‘stay away’ posters loitering everywhere. She skipped her way through what I considered my darkest roads - I’m actually a little offended at how fearlessly she approached me, tbh.
I watched in alarm as she fiddled with my heart. I was too awed at her courage to make it this far that I let her, I was so intrigued by her that I let my walls down. I always told myself I just want to see what she would do, then I would put up my walls again.
It has been months and I am forgetting to fear. I am forgetting to lock up the gates to my heart every night. It has been so long and it feels like sunrise has come again after darks years. All the little creatures are rising again, the eco system of my heart is roaring back to life and it refuses to go back to hiding. The birds are soaring again, the rivers are running again and I am loving again.
But my friend still doesn’t know. She’s still poking and watching as the light pours in. She merely says ‘I like this’ and moves on. She doesn’t realise how her courage brought light to me again. My friend is very weird.
