there’s a very important fact many people tend to forget about Yosuke Hanamura:

He is a 16/17 year old teenager.

now, i don’t know how old you are, anon, but i’m gonna assume you’re a lot younger than me. I’m 23 years old and I was 17 once. Surprising, right? i hate to admit it but I was fucking terrible around that age, maybe making comments similar to ones yosuke has made. and you know what? i regret them so fucking much. SO MUCH. that’s a part of growing up.

back to yosuke. he is sexist and homophobic. he IS… through a lot of the game. he’s not really near the end. the ENTIRE GAME is about figuring out your True Self, and acknowledging and overcoming the flaws you have. that’s what happens to yosuke!

yosuke was really susceptible to how other people saw him. his own shadow even said something like “You act so happy-go-lucky because you’re terrified of being alone!” something a lot of teenagers (or people in general) relate to.

once yosuke met the protag, accepted his shadow and started befriending the others, he realized that he doesn’t really need to put on airs or pretend to think or act in a way that’s not genuine.

and it’s surprisingly difficult to unlearn things that society thrusts upon you, ie sexism and homophobia. especially in japan.

It’s not like the game doesn’t punish Yosuke for the stupid shit he says or does. It does! all the time!! that’s why he’s so unlucky!!

let’s take the infamous camping trip. we all know the one. when he asked kanji if he and protag are going to be safe with him in the tent. that is a really fucked up thing to ask someone, and it really really hurt kanji’s feelings.

karmatic punishment: girls burst in and he’s forced to sleep extremely close to another male. sure that male was his best friend, but still.

next day of the trip: yosuke forces the girls to wear bikinis because they “owed” them (the boys) for messing up dinner and sleeping in their tent. then when they give in, he makes some comment about them being perfect once they “grow up a little” rude little fuck

karmatic punishment: he’s kicked OFF A CLIFF into a river of presumably icy cold water. and then he gets puked on.

there’s a lot of other examples, but those are the two that come to mind immediately.

my point is that YES, Yosuke is a little fucker but he gets BETTER. he GROWS and finally starts to understand things, starts to understand he can be himself, understands the fucked up shit he grew up with and starts to unlearn them.

forgive my rudeness. i’m not actually sorry about being rude, since i’ve seen more hate for yosuke in one day than i have for adachi in my entire 6ish years in the P4 fandom. when you see people say “adachi is so cute! bf!!” when he literally killed two women– no, a woman and a GIRL– because they didn’t act like he thought women should act. (of course i’m not hating on adachilovers, to each their own, just realize that he’s a murderer, ok?)

I’ve recently fallen back into just being a generally pleasing person to everyone, after making so much progress towards just being myself, and its been really bothering me lately, so much so that for the first time in my adult life i’m actually working on finding a psychiatrist and setting up an appointment just so i can figure out issues that have been pushing me back to wearing masks all the time.

Persona 4 was the first game i played that made me look at what i was doing in life, and it showed me that we all wear masks at times, and that those parts we don’t like are still a part of us, and until we accept them, we can’t even begin to work towards becoming who we want to be. I’m still stopping myself from time to time and looking at the choices i make and how i act to see if that’s really me, or if i’m faking it to please someone else.

On the subject of being horrible, i was just as bad as Yosuke, hell, i had a friend that opened up to everyone that he was sexually attracted to guys in highschool, and at that point, it was not something i was comfortable with. IF i could go back, i’d be a supportive friend about it, and probably punch myself for being such a dolt, but i can’t go back and i can’t change what i’ve said or done. All i can do is not revert back to who i was before, and acknowledge that it happened, it was a part of me, but i was wrong.
