A thing that I love about translating Kaamelott in my language is not only the fact that I can use all the traditional names of the arthurian mythology like Artù, Ginevra, Lancillotto, Merlino and so on, but also that I have to change some things to avoid phonetical confusion.
Like: I know that Arthur is called "Sire" in French, and even in Italian the words "Sire" exists and its used for the sovereign, pronounced SEEREH, like "seer + eh, like in never" ("Beh proprio perché voi siete il Sire, fan cinquemila lire, è un prezzo di favor" sings a famous Italian singer in an old song), but Sire is phonetically similar to "Sir", the title, directly taken from English, that we use for the knights, instead of the French "seigneur". The pronunciation of Sir varies, sometimes in the Dub you can hear the exact English pronunciation, sometimes a more italian "SER". Nevertheless, to avoid any confusion, I chose a more practical "Maestà/Vostra Maestà" (Your Majesty/Majesty/Majestè/Votre Majestè).
It's strange, I know, but it has a meaning. I think it's the same reason behind the name of Artù. Re Artù is ONLY the legendary king and not anyone else. Arturo is a name you can give to a person, but you'll never find someone who is called Artù.
Artù: (ahr-TOO) refers ONLY tonthe king of Britain. Arturo can be anyone else, but le Roi Arthur is Re Artù.
It's not the same with Guenièvre/Guinevere, because Ginevra ( jih-NEV-rah) is a very common name for baby girls here in Italy at the moment, and, of course, the most popular and famous Ginevra is Artù's wife. It's so soft and feminine, I love this name so much 😭❤️.
J'espère pouvoir bientôt expliquer plus en détail mes choix de traduction et d'adaptation 🙏🏻 si cela vous intéresse, bien sûr.
You deserve peace. ♡
