second attempt at digital painting, trying to do an Emma Frost headshot in the Future Fight style.... really fun and frustrating to learn all at the same time.Ā
The X-Men Project: the early 1990s!
Kirby, Cockrum, Byrne and Lee. There were some amazing other artists in there (Paul Smith, Art Adams, geez so many) but I tried to limit my project to 12 pages of work. Here are the Jim Lee inspired/X-MenĀ ā92 style pages. One thing I learned was go heavy on action and posing, and be liberal with the hatch marks. The story and character (like the previous ones) are just a silly excuse to mimic an art style that had a major influence on me growing up.Ā
sat down and tried to get a better handle on digital painting. Geez, got a lot to learn! You can spend hours drawing strands of hair and then... it looks like you drew a thousand strands of hair. Ugh! (All Clip Studio Paint.)
The X-Men Project: the early 1980s!Ā
It was really nostalgic to study John Byrneās early X-Men pages. His style had a huge impact on me growing up, and looking at the sheer talent of his storytelling up close was really satisfying. I hope I did this little side-story some justice, it was incredibly fun at the very least.Ā

The X-Men Project: 1970sĀ
Looking back on Cockrumās run, it was good to study his heavy, deliberate line work. He experimented with panels outside the grid, similar to Neal Adams before him. Every girl had serious cheekbones. I forgotĀ how much the characters explained the story as it progressed and that all knowing narrator (who was that anyway?!). I love that Eric the Red just hands out new code names and costumes - and so much mind-control!Ā
These panels would fit off-scene around X-Men #105. To check out the 1960s study, Ā http://scmartel.tumblr.com/post/167772457007/an-ongoing-project-trying-to-capture-the-spirit-of
The new Trinary from X-Men:Red. Taking a guess on what her powers would look like, but fun to have someone new to draw. Throwback added to a 1992 trading card (geez, I spent waaaay too much money collecting those back in the day, sorry mom).
An ongoing project trying to capture the spirit of Lee/Kirby during the early X-Men years with a made up character. Iāll continue this study through the 70s, 80s and 90s.Ā
Messy redesign of Cerise from Excalibur. Itās been a while since sheās been in anything (I think?) and her old costume needed moreĀ āspace warriorā. Maybe the pants should be black? Ā
Secret Avengers - the book and lineup Iād like to read. And draw.Ā
(just a few updated edits from the last version I posted).Ā

From the old work-in-progress folder. Maybe someday thisāll get cleaned up and colored? Was inspired by the old Art Adams poster that hung in my room.

Comic Book Page Technical Specifications
This is a post for comic book artists preparing their pages for their publisher or colourist. Iām aware that many pros still donāt know some of this stuff, often because the bigger publishers have production teams who will take the incorrectly sized or shaped pages and adjust them before passing on to colourists or for print. However, this a) is giving more work to people that you can easily do yourself and b) reduces the amount of control you have over how your work is printed. It makes sense to provide files that will present your work in the best way possible.
So, the basics of a digital page file:

Iām putting this beneath both artist and writer advice tags as this is stuff that is hugely important.
