Always wanted to do a cool community project but didn't know where to start? Start with us! DICEM: Diverse & Inclusive Community EnviroMentors aims to provide aspiring gender-diverse youth mentors of colour (ages 18-29) with the opportunity to learn how to engage their community environment in fulfilling, tangible, and accessible ways. In this program, youth will learn how to become mentors and stewards of their community environment, and will bring their teachings back to their peers. We trust participants to define their own “community environment” and the gaps they wish to address within them. DICEM, as an extension of SCI AIDE, provides youth with the opportunity to connect on their shared interests and to turn that interest into community action. “DICEM” as a Latin word itself means “I am showing / explaining”; we hope that participants can engage in exploring and taking initiative in science communication, cultural connection, and grassroots activism together. So, long story short--you can create a project (can be as simple as a single workshop or as complex as an anthology) that bolsters your environment (personal, social, and/or worldly) for little to no cost to you! At the moment, this is only open to folks who live in Toronto, though we're seeing if we can open that up to all of Canada.
