Well, well, well.

My initial plan for this meta piece was to make a long disclaimer at the start [due to the harassment I endured on the previous piece on the same topic], but in light of recent events, I feel there is no better disclaimer than the words of the director himself. I’ll allow his words above to stand as proof that the following reading of the film is a valid interpretation and a valuable one worth considering.

One disclaimer I will make is that I am including some online sources that I will link to throughout this meta analysis so that you can easily access some reference material quickly. However, there’s a lot more where these ideas came from. Feel free to message me for more sources and info, if you are interested.

Also, please note that this meta is long and image heavy. Reader discretion is advised for those reading this on mobile app.

Finally, this meta piece will be broken up into multiple parts. Part 1 is mostly a laundry list of examples of sexual imagery and relevant quotes, in order to prepare the reader for later discussions of the use of this imagery throughout The Last Jedi. While some things are explained in the context of the film, not everything is completely covered in Part 1. I ask that you be patient with certain aspects of the imagery that remain unclear in Part 1, as likely it will be covered more extensively in another part.

Thesis

In this multiple part meta analysis, I aim to compile and analyze as much sexual imagery and subtext between characters Rey and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo [with the addition of some imagery between Finn and Rose] as possible in The Last Jedi, and to examine the underlying themes and purposes these symbols serve within the story.

Analysis in this meta piece will be primarily based on the works of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and commonly used tropes/allusions in film and literature. Sources will be cited at the end of the meta piece or linked within the post.
