But it’s also worth noting that Centipeetle only started to remember who she was when Steven started singing to her.

So what if it’s songs in general? We already know that all gems understand and benefit from music, from how quickly Peridot picked up singing and how Jasper didn’t miss a beat when she did her first fusion dance, despite coming from homeworld, where fusion dancing is completely unnecessary.

I think music is a strong form of expression, or even the strongest form of expression, that all gems understand and need. In fact, the lines from Peridot that seem like a one off joke might be a very good indication of that. 

“The Pearl here has exhibited an aptitude for engineering that I begrudgingly respect, but that doesn’t explain the spontaneous singing, crying, …singing while crying.”

We now know that gem corruption is when a gem is far too mentally unstable to be itself anymore. And we all know that Pearl is the most mentally unstable of the Crystal Gems. But despite her tragic obsessiveness over a deceased loved one, she still manages to be herself. She didn’t take damage from the diamonds – the crystal gems probably hid under Rose’s shield to survive – but it is notable that she is sustainable despite how mentally shake she obviously is. 

“Singing, crying …singing while crying.”

That implies she sings through her tears. Because she’s noticed that singing makes her feel better.

What if Pearl’s the first one to find the very vital importance that singing has to gems? She might not realize how important it is, but she uses it to keep herself sane. Music is something that can start the healing process for gems – because it allows them to feel emotion in a way they best understand.

I’m very excited. For our finale I think we’ll have a beautifully written and executed song that heals those poor tortured corrupted gems. >v<
